hmmmm what's your intention? i will say external SSD should be more for those files you access less.

those that you access frequently best is put on the built-in storage

Depending on usage, if it's on a 40gbps external SSD enclosure is fast enough so it's totally fine, but 1 downside is that, it will not support apple intelligence if you move the OS to external SSD.

cause i thought when you emphasised personal files, i thought is cause is confidential, you don't want to have to connected directly to the internet via the mac.

so it's more like you store files in general on external.

All my personal files. It is protected by fingerprint scanning too. Samsung t7 ssd.

Another reason is the internal drive is already 5yrs old. Safer to store on a newer drive imo.
