Mac startup hdd

Ive got a quick qs,

I added a 2nd hdd to my MBP 15 early 2011 and set the SSD and HDD together as a fusion drive. Just a few days ago i got the dreaded white screen.

Just white screen and nothing else. Others that have gone thru same process could at least go to recovery mode and get into disk utility to hopefully fix or find out what is going on
Tried going into recovery, web recovery, safe modes and it all got stuck halfway thru the loading process.

So now i got my SSD(startup disk) out and connected to another mac as an external drive, it doesnt show up in finder. In disk utility it shows up but says unformatted. Im currently unsure how to proceed since i cant transfer files from this hard drive.

As for the other half of the Fusion drive, the hdd is inside a caddy and i cant retrieve it yet cos i misplaced my torx screw to get it out from my MBP.

Im posting here first to see if anyone has any advise

yes i am.
since its a fusion drive spanning my ssd and hdd, i wonder if this is the cause of it not being able to be read since i just plugged in my ssd

If you're trying to recover the files.
You'll need to mount both the SSD and HDD. Fusion drive creates a logical volume ("merging" two physical drive to appear as 1 drive on your macOS), hence you cannot read only from 1 drive.

You mentioned that you've used a caddy. Could the connection between the caddy and logic board be lose? Try remounting it the drives.

MacBooks sometimes doesn't play well with 3rd party hardware.
Consider separating the drives first, see if the caddy is stable before implementing the fusion drive.

Also backup your stuff.

even if u can't get e logical drive to show up, u can still run data recovery software like photorec on e drives separately. fusion drive is like a raid0 or jbod so data shud be recoverable assuming they have not been overwritten yet. but as always remember to backup yr data to prevent headaches when such issues occur.

I don't think Fusion drive is a mere RAID0 or JBOD implementation with data recovery that straight forward with FileVault in place.
Could you show me an article that states this?

it's not exactly like a raid0 or jbod but seems to work similar. check out e 1st answer

interesting concept. but I think the experiment is rather flawed though since images could still be displayed if there are missing data. but it definitely offer a glimmer of hope.

Suppose it's a worth a try, provided he clones his drive first incase anything fails along the way.

yup it’s worth a try if he has zero backups

ive made backups and connected the SSD and HDD together into a working mac to do a final check of files just in case.

running techtool pro to diagnose and optimised the SSD and HDD didnt do much good. I even split the fusion and deleted data from both drives to do a fresh installation but after my mbp detected my USB installer it went to white screen right after the progress bar did its thing.

Now im back on the web scouring for more information

my 2 options are
1- to try with a diff hdd (which is troublesome cos its not mine and i have alot of data to port over just to use it)
2- install macos via ext hdd from another working mac (im currently leaning towards this)

im starting to suspect that its a hardware issue and that the replacement GPU from apple is the cause. sigh

I dont think its APFS format, i set this up a few years ago and it was before APFS came out.

Its stil journalled
