I just started uni and am looking for a new laptop. I have always been using a Windows PC but this time im starting to consider a Mac as well. With COMEX here i also got more headache.

Looking at;

New Macbook Pro (Q4 release)

Or

Asus Zenbook series (UX310UQ specifically)

My laptop usage will be for minor video editing, photoshop and a little bit of design (my course is Communication Studies) but i would also like to continue playing my STEAM Games.

Would running a parallel OS on a mac be significantly slower for PC games.

Halp!

Potential buyers usually work out how much budget they have to work with to begin with, and everything else fall into place after that.

Do be aware that the UX310UQ series appears to be TN display panels and not the preferred IPS panels.

If you aren't gaming on OSX on an apple machine, the preferred method of gaining the best performance is to install a different OS via bootcamp. Do be aware that apple portable computers are known for their lack of a dedicated graphics card. You might want to take that into consideration when choosing to game on their machines.

Running of OS virtualisation softwares are usually reserved for lightweight activities, I wouldn't recommend "gaming" in such a way. You might be able to get away with playing classic games from the 80's or 90's by running DOSbox emulator that doesn't require a separate OS.

if price is similar and yr only using for productivity and not intense gaming, then mac.

also consider software but most can used across platforms these days.

My budget is actually <2k. If i wait for the macbook pro it might be a little out of my budget though. Would the exceeding of budget be worth it?

I currently see the Asus U310UQ at $1530 ( i7, 1tb sata? 256 ssd, ddr4 Ram) is it a reasonable price?

Also when transferring files from peers from mac to PC, are there any potential problems?

Thank you!

You can run windows on Mac but that will take at least 100gb from the ssd. The windows partition runs on a different filesystem so access to either is exclusive.
Q

Bottom line if you need windows for programs or games, stick with a windows lappie unless you know what you're getting into.

If you can stay within the Mac ecosystem they're fine fine lappies for the money

I am using a Macbook Air and I run Parallels in it with Windows 7.

I am not sure if it is because of this, the battery life is cut short a lot or its just the Macbook Air battery itself already reached some peak and getting worse by the day...

It is because I compared with a 2nd Macbook Air i have side by side which runs the usual Mac OS only and that 2nd one the battery is way better. Note : this 2nd Macbook Air is newer.

Anyway, I think Macbooks the battery is really better than Windows laptops. If you compare the SLEEP mode. Macbook will really sleep and when wake up even after days, the battery level remains about the same as when it went to sleep... maybe reduce few % point.

But Windows laptops... even you shut down or hibernate it, the battery still drain like mad.....

Actually, for space use, both the OS can access the same Mac OS disk space.

So, as long as you cater for some Windows OS files to run and also the virtual disk size, should be enough

What about installed programs, updates, temp cache, swapfiles etc?

I ran out of space on Win 7 using a first gen ssd (40gb) without photoshop, video editing and games. Had to resort to creative use of NTFS hard links to move some system files to HDD. 20-30 gb? Not doable.

For win 10, the os updates require at least 25gb of free space, perhaps more. I don't have games on my 100gb partition. The largest program is MS office. Personal files are stored elsewhere. I'm left with barely 15-20gb after each update before doing a cleanup.

It's read-only both ways.

You can adjust the setting any time you needed to.

I am running Parallels and for few years already... all good... for all the Office apps, all as good as running from Windows laptop...

From time to time, just compact the Parallels space...

Nope, it is full access both ways...

I will read/write to the Mac's Home or desktop and sub folders from there...

So, when I need to open any files in either OS, i will go to that OS and open the file from the one location...

I was referring to boot camp windows not parallels, which is a virtualization. Works in a pinch but performance suffers and some programs barely work.

It's possible in boot camp windows too but one must buy additional drivers for it to work.
