Hi all bro,

My MacBook Pro of 1+ year die on me recently. There is a flashing folder with a question mark during start up. Went to a shop and was told hard disk and OS corrupted, quoted $280! Can someone advise whether the price is reasonable or expensive.

Thanks

WHAT THE F***. Ask the shop to go and rob the bank. Corrupted hard disk just need to reformat & then re-install the OS.

If your hard-disk is damaged, just get a new 500GB 2.5inch harddisk & replace it yourself. Cost less than $80...

Do you have Applecare?

Second, what exact model do you have? Some models you may not be able to replace the HDD yourself.

If you are sure a storage replacement is the solution and have a/n:

Unibody MacBook Pro, you will need the appropriate Phillips and Torx screwdrivers
and preferred HDD/SSD replacement.

Retina MacBook Pro, you will need the appropriate Pentalobe and Torx screwdrivers
and preferred Apple "Proprietary" flash module / OWC Aura Pro SSD replacement.

Visit ifixit.com, macsales.com and their respective Youtube channels for Mac identification
and installation guides.

? mark with flashing folder icon means that the hard drive is no longer being detected by the computer... reformat and reinstall will not solve the problem as the HDD has failed already.

For MacBook Pro,when flashing icons could be due to three problem..one is the so is corrupted just do a reinstall will do,second is hard disk has fail and required to replace hard disk and thirdly the hard disk cable has fail that why can't detect the harddisk..

And if the MacBook Pro is the retina version den only the first two will happen as don have cable...and if the MacBook pro is retina display itis using solid state..and shop quote u $280 to replace grab and ran!!!lolz as is very very cheap..but is the normal version den bit too exp

It is a ssd, not hard disk in your MacBook air. From about S$300+ you can order a replacement SSD from MacSales (OWC) and tools provided to DIY replace the failed SSD.
