Ok maybe this is dumb. but as my helper was leaving this morning for her day off, i could see a new tattoo on her shoulder. I asked her about it, and she said she got it last Sunday.

She already has one tattoo which she had at time of employing her. which she said to was to cover a scar which people thought looked like a 'gunshot wound'. And i thought that was fine. But now she has this new one.

I did a google for "maid came back with a tattoo", and came back with zero results. Either it's because no one cares, or because it never happens!! :s13:

Anyway. She's only been with us for about 3 weeks.

personally, I don't realy like the idea of a girl who looks like she's the gf of some gangster looking after my daughter. But maybe i'm making a mountain out of a molehill?

Am i making a big deal out of nothing? or is this maid taking advantage of a 'permissive' ang mo?

Well, her body is hers. If the maid is doing her job, then forget it. Nothing to worry. However, if she doesn't come to your standard, then change a new maid. The tattoo is body art.

my sisters have tattoos. I'm from Australia where the Pastors dog has tattoos.

But we're not in Australia. We're in Asia where, i believe, and maybe i'm 100% wrong, that tattoos are still fairly stigmatised as being associated with criminality/gangs.

But in fairness, even in Australia i know of employees who ask their boss if they'd object to them getting tattoos. Usually teh answer is "so long as i dont see it i dont care".

I've never had a maid before. so i dont know if this sort of thing is a red flag. Or if it's fairly normal?

It is funny that u associated tattoo as gangster. :D In modern world, tattoo is just an art of self expression. As long as she dun smoke, "f" word dun come out her mouth, dun point middle finger at u, most important, she does her job well, this "gangster" is a good maid.

Sometimes it’s an image thingy

and this is my thoughts.

the other element to my concern is this:

the tattoo isn't huge but it's not tiny either. I'd estimate anywhere between say $50-$150.

Now for someone on a helper wage, that's a lot of money.

Unless..... she's got for cheap/free. And if she did, who the heck is she associating with that is giving her good deals on tattoos?

this whole situation raises a lot of questions and scenarios in my mind. None that are good.

I feel it is more important that you make sure she got the tattoo at a safe place rather than worrying about the tattoo itself... Since she is taking care of your daughter/family, need to ensure clean bill of health. Personally, I wouldn't bother too much about her getting a tattoo as long as it is easily covered up by clothes...

That's a good point. didn't think of that.

Updated Health check at a minimum.

Why not? It’s not your life - it’s her.

Well for a start, as another poster pointed out, tattoos carry risk of hepatitis and other health issues. however small, this is something that is a concern for someone preparing my food and caring for my daughter.

Also, she lives under my roof. and she is very closely associated with my family. and therefore, her associations matter.

Would you want someone who, possibly, runs around with gangster types living under your roof?

Maybe have loan sharks knocking on your door? or god knows what.

Not quite as simple as "her life, not mine"

To me, having tattoos or not shouldn't be a reason to worry. I would worry about WHERE she got the tattoo. Is the place reputable, are they clean? If the helper does her job well, carries out her responsibilities, I see no reason why a tattoo would matter. this is 2019. Tattoo does not equals to gangster. Its just a form of self expression.

In Japan, probably yes. But in Singapore ... I'd think really only a small minority holds that mindset. To most people seeing your family out and about, there would be absolutely zero association with criminals and gangs.

i have the privilege of having parents in laws (locals) who probably fall into that minority subset.

I can only imagine the wailing when they discover some 'gangster' has carriage of their grand daughter on some days.
