Hi guys,

Would anyone know if Interns, or Pupils are eligible for make-up pay for ICT? e.g. recalled for 2 weeks amidst internship/pupillage period of 6 months.

I can't seem to find any information on MINDEF's website on this.

Thanks.

you will get rank pay only....

Let say you CPL rank pay = $500/mth

you go ICT 2 weeks = you get $250 only

Hmmm... supposing the intern's pay includes CPF... then would I be right to say that makeup pay is then applicable?

The thing is, there doesn't seem to be any guidelines on this, not even on NS portal. Training slides for HR personnel also doesn't specifically say who can or cannot receive makeup pay.

The Employment Act does talk about 'employment' and that it includes part-time jobs, but an intern/pupil doesn't seem to quite fit under that - for they are not paid for OT.

this is the guideline I found online

Payable Components

 Basic Salary
Allowances which are:
  • - received on a regular basis for at least 4 months out the last 6 months preceding the NS training - taxable and subject to CPF contribution
  • - included in the NSman’s employment or service contract
  • Note: for special circumstances which deviate from these conditions – Please indicate reasons in the remarks column. Failing which the allowance may be disapproved.

anyway, is HR agreeable to claim MUP for your intern? if so just get them to submit, the most mindef will reject the claim.

if not, intern can claim on his own behalf. outcome in line with above. Thats assuming your firm is making him take no pay leave.

are you a law grad doing the 6 month practice training period? if you are, you can get a guaranteed deferment.

pay wise I think it'll be rank pay for interns, but for pupils you probably can get make up pay.

You are the approving authority of such cases?

it's under the deferment faq. also I applied for and obtained a deferment. the practice training period for trainee lawyers is unique (and guaranteed for deferment) because of we have to complete 6 months of training before a certain date in order to get called to the bar for that year. If there's a high key ICT during that period, there'll be quite a high likelihood that you won't be able to finish the 6 months before the cut off date.

if you're talking about make up pay, pupils/trainees are essentially employees of the company so it's no different from make up pay for other professions.
