hi all,
I'm thinking of bringing my family (me,wife,7 yr old boy) on a BUDGET trip to Maldives during the March school holidays.
SQ cheapest fare flies on Sunday night and reaches near midnight.
Will fly back on Wed night, so its a 3D3N trip.

Please recommend me the best place to stay for budget of around s$150 to s$200/night. Must be a nice beach hotel with its own beach, as we will just be snorkling and maybe tour the islands during the day.

Will the hotel do ferry transfer from airport when we reach at 11pm?
Also, do I need to be particular on which islands to stay in or just stay at the closest island nearest the Airport?

I found this hotel at Tripadvisor (Hotel Ocean Grand at Hulhumale 
Kaani Magu) for only S$199/night.

My budget is $1500 for flights, max $250/night for hotel and $500 for spending= S$2750. Is it enough?

Anything I should look out for?
Hope to hear any constructive advice.

I have been on Hulhumale a few times but did not stay there. Its next to the airport. Our boat crew took us on a tour & we also spent some time on a beach & hospital there :(. Our government helped to build a school there - the design is unmistakably Singaporean-like.

All I can say is it may not be the typical Maldives beach resort/hotel and may not feel exclusive. In the Maldives, one resort usually occupy the entire island & no cars. Huhulmale is a very large island (reclaimed), with a lot of newish residences with wide roads (much more organised unlike Male). Male is overcrowded so the Govt has been housing people in Huhulmale. So it may not be the typical Maldives' resort experience. Sorry, dont mean to be wet blanket.

Perhaps you shld check with travel agents whether they run any packages to Maldives.

From memory, try resorts like Bandos, Paradise Island, Sun Island or Club Med ?

In Maldives, most islands are privately owned so not easy to go island hopping . The locals may know some secluded beaches that they may take u to.

Anyone have recommendation for hotel on Male city, prefer minute walk to Villingili ferry terminal. Just need a simple clean room for a few hour sleep, probably checking-in after 10.30pm & checking-out at 9am.

Thanks.

Definitely smaller islands - Male is the big main one. Most hotels must take boat ride from Male

I thinking to book Anantara Veli resort in Maldives for mid-May. Maybe just breakfast only in package. Lunch and dinner in restaurants.

It's a adult-only resort, with a sister-island where families can stay, connected by boat I think.

Anyone stayed there before? Can share if is good over-water bungalows, food, restaurants,' things to do inside and outside resort...etc...for 4D3N?

As well what to take note must-do and must avoid?

last time I visited, there is only 1 SIM card operator Dhiraagu at the airport, outside after clearing customs in public area.

Not expensive .. maybe SGD15 (cant recall) but it was busy & long wait. Some in our group could not get bcos our boat ride out of the airport had arrived.

if in a group, maybe one of you can chiong out without luggage to look for the SIM card.

that was a few years ago, not sure if changed.

Yes their seaplane transfers every year up price.

just came back from maldives today.
I reserve Changi wireless set, but forgot to collect before flying.

Yeah got 2 Telco shop just right of exiting the customs.

the data plan is $15 USD for 4GB (7 days), $20 USD for 17GB.
Opt for the $15 USD since 4 GB is sufficient for me.

The normal domestic flight (Turbo plane + speedboat) is about USD $100 cheaper than the Seaplane direct, but i guess the seaplane saves u time, plus its a bit different landing in the sea. lol.
Anyway the domestic flight + speedboat is already USD $300 per person roundtrip. really expensive.

I do realise why things are so expensive there, everything is shipped in from faraway, and tons of tourists.... europeans seem to love maldives, and i see tons of japanese and chinese at the airport too.
