For those driving in Japan, especially Hokkaido, map codes can be a real life saver. On the other hand, it can also be a pain in the ass if it's a wrong one.

Recently, I've been trying to find map codes for the various places I intend to drive to but it's been kind of difficult. However, I came across a method to obtain the correct code.

URL: 北海道札幌市中央区北3条西6丁目の地図(43.06185,141.35055,1/8000):マピオン

Zoom out, then move the map till the red bold cross is approximately at the location you want. Zoom in and repeat till you get the exact spot.

At the top right corner is 便利ツール > 地図URL. Clicking this will display a dialog box with the Mapcode.

To do a reverse search ie you have the Mapcode and you need the location. At the top left hand corner is マップコード. Click it and enter the Mapcode just below, then click the button on the right.

There are other functions available, eg 写真 where you can confirm the location with pictures. Maybe others can chime in with more information.

Anyway, hope this information will help others planning a self drive in Japan.

Will update on the mapcodes upon my return in June.

The GPS in my rental car could also take the postal code. But I only found out on the last day after emailing the Toocar service quite a number of times (it was one of the last options and I missed it)

Actually I have driven a number of times in Japan and have never used map codes. I simply use the phone number. For natural landmarks, I choose some nearby building or ships. Google map can give often give me the phone number and I find this more convenient that hunting for mapcodes.
