None.

If you are expecting a kid to know how to self-defence after barely a few months or a year, other than that few fancy moves, he'll only get beaten to a pulp first.

If you are looking at an all round martial arts that would train their discipline, spirit and body - Aikido.

Just physical workout to burn him off - Taekwondo (there's a philosophy part that will come when he's going for his 2nd Dan or Poomsae), Karate, Brazilian Jujitsu, Judo, etc.

Physical workout martial arts these days have the "study" component relegated until when kids are older. Aikido incorporates these studies directly into the movement.

Taekwondo vs karate vs judo vs aikido vs jujitsu.
Which is the best martial art for kids to learn for self defence?

i would think the best martial art is the one ur kid is interested in

then this pursuit will b more meaningful and lasts longer

so might as well expose him to those n let him pick n choose

Ah Moh Boxing is the best and most useful as main use.
I learn tkd all the way to 2nd dan. But I only incorporate the footwork.

judo... ultimately is about grappling and throwing your opponent onto the ground... judo is not about flashy moves but being effective~~:(
