naturally... it is not meant to cover all the material in stats with sufficient depth (i doubt such book exist)... but is a very good book for lower level stats students, it covers alot of famous examples and give the student alot of exposure to very useful techniques for doing stats or probability.... i find myself referring back to it from time to time when im doing higher lvl stats modules.

No doubt it is a good book to me, as mentioned in my previous post.

Back in JC, my lecturer took about a couple of lectures to finish going through complex numbers but now... The lecturer just take like 2h to finish the entire chapter :eek:

Ya, kinda. Most of the prof will just assume that all of us have learnt that in college so if you're from poly, I think you'll have to put in a bit more effort bah :s22:

Hahahaahaha thanks for that last pic ohmy. Hmmm, yeah at first i didnt wanna go to uni so i didnt like, chiong for gpa. Now im not really regretting la hahahah so its okay. I was thinking of SIM already.
Mmm correct me if im wrong, pure math is more of algebra and proving while applied is statistics and graphs etc?

Engineering Maths

For those going take Engineering, maths will be a must.

Just a heads up

Aside from complex numbers, vectors, matrices which the prof will literally finish these 3 topics in 3 two hour lessons,

You will be exposed to a very literature perspective calculus. For example, differentiation is no more dy/dx. In local U, you must use "definition of derivative" to solve for algebraic equation. now want differentiate x^.5 also need to use new formula.
All these will open up topics like limit laws, mean value theorem and derivatives. All of which are heavy stuff which you have never knew existed in calculus. Just a simple algebraic equation now need to understand and apply so many steps.

And the best part is ONCE you think you understand the lecture, you open your tutorials and cry.
Then ONCE you somehow cleared your tutorials, you start doing past year papers, then that's when you really cry.

Speaking from a poly student taking engineering now, all these stuff, its no joke. And this is just the first semester's worth of eng maths.

I'm sure other courses have other math topics like Linear algebra, statistics, probability mathematical induction. Golden rule still applies - Its Hard

You might want to find out more on the career part, and the possibility of postgraduate studies.

I know some took a maths degree purely out of interest. There are quite a few, whom I know, took a maths degree as a second undergraduate degree purely out of interest.

Among the above people, some realised during their studies for a maths degree that they don't actually like mathematics (or rather, they don't like to do proofs). They prefer learning new computational-type of techniques to proving mathematical statements, and they are satisfied with knowing that there are proofs which exist to justify those techniques. It doesn't really hurt (except emotional-wise, perhaps) those who took a maths degree as a second undergraduate degree, and who also didn't do well in proof-based courses, since they already have an undergraduate degree and a stable career. It hurt most to those who took it as a first degree and eventually dropped out from it.

You might want to note that there are people who took a graduate diploma to switch to postgraduate studies in Mathematics, while some (usually those with insufficient mathematics in their undergraduate degrees in Economics) did the same for postgraduate studies in Economics.

Postgraduate or graduate refers to the studies after an undergraduate qualification.

A postgraduate diploma and a graduate diploma can mean different level of studies after undergraduate level qualifications. Usually, a postgraduate diploma means studying most or all of the courses at Master's level, while a graduate diploma means studying most or all of the courses at Bachelor's level in the UK. The latter may include only courses in intermediate year(s) and final year.

A Master's degree (with the exception of some countries' Master's degrees) is normally considered to be at postgraduate level in the UK. There are some 'conversion' Master's which may include an additional year of studies at undergraduate level before another year of studies at postgraduate level. There are also 'conversion' Master's degrees which consist of courses in undergraduate degrees but examined at postgraduate level.

In the US, 'postgraduate' is seldom or never used.

If you mean UniSIM, then go to the SIM library to read up the study guides for UniSIM maths degree courses. Courses which are named such as, "Algebraic Xxx", "Xxx Analysis", "Abstract Xxx", "Modern/Abstract Algebra", "Number Theory", "Axiomatic Xxx" or "Xxx Topology" are usually Pure Mathematics topics.

Modern/Abstract Algebra (Groups, Rings, Fields, Modules etc) is normally considered as Pure Mathematics, not so much for elementary algebra that we learned in Secondary/JC/Poly. I think the previous Further Mathematics in JC included some elementary Group Theory.

Statistics courses is usually applied in nature. However, some courses in Statistical Inference or Stochastic Processes, and econometrics courses with name like Econometric Theory are much like Pure Mathematics.

Graph Theory is more like Pure Mathematics, not so much of the graphs we see in coordinate geometry. Vectors can be a Pure Mathematics topics when topics like vector space is included.
