Mavericks - Missing Java icon in Preferences pane

I seem to recall in the past on Mavericks when I went into preferences there was a Java icon and when I clicked on it, it opened another pane which showed the version and I could get it to check for updates.

That seems to have disappeared now. Did a recent update remove it? So then how do I know what version Java I have and how do I get it to check for updates?

Just go to Java.com and check your version there, it should prompt you for updates or to install.

Thanks will try that out. But do you have the Java icon or is yours missing too? I just want to be sure its not something wrong with my iMac because I did an erase and reinstall recently and restored the user account and applications from Time Machine.

There's nothing wrong, don't worry. Java had been taken out few Mac OS version ago and when you do a fresh installation, you wouldn't get the Java icon. Simply download from Java.com to reinstate..

I thought Java said Apple now provides its version of Java for Apple machines? Well as long as Java is there and up to date that's fine.

Was just concerned because I'm now on Safari and unlike last time when I was on Safari which had an extension which would tell you each time a plug in was out of date.

From OS X Lion onwards, Apple does not provide a version of Java for its machines, it has to be downloaded from Java webpage.

Thanks. Just downloaded version 8 from Java and the icon is back.
