did you try to disable the explict and implicit beamfoaming? what i know is that it will affect the wireless and your client needs to support it to make use of it

I have some questions regarding ac68u operating in media bridge mode.

1) Can I link AC68U-1(Router mode) via ethernet cable -> AC68U-2 (Media bridge)

2) With the above connection, can AC68U-2 broadcast wifi (Configure same SSID as AC68U-1) + devices such as TV connected to AC68U-2 ethernet port?

Use AP mode better. Cause you need to use cable for your TV. Media bridge only for wifi connection

I'm running AC68 as to RT56(AP mode)
RT56 to 2 media player and HDTV

For ASUS RT-AC68U/ASUS RT-AC66U/ASUS RT-N66U users,

Do give it a try to see whether it helps on transmission rate ;) performance might varies.

I recently discovered that following Linksys's recommendation of keeping all antennas straight up when on a single floor would increase link rate and performance for me versus Asus's recommendation of putting all three antennas in different directions. My laptop's link rate was typically just above 700 Mbits while in the same room as my router. With all antennas straight up, I now get close to 866 Mbps link rate.

Cisco recommends the same antennas vertical orientation for their enterprise APs. I came recently to the info Aruba recommends the same orientation.
That's valid even for 3x3 APs.
I don't have a clue why Asus recommends that orientation.

Hi maylyn

doing networking research on my new BTO.

It seems that you are currently doing ERL testing and this also. Do you prefer the ERL?

What combo do you all suggest? Current foreseeable usage is only 1 wired PC in the study. Will plan for NAS and network printer. Zhone with:
1)ERL+Unifi AP Pro?
2)AC68U
3)ERL+AC68U(as AP)
4)AC68U + Unifi AP Pro?

Need to plan in advance for cabling and positioning

2)AC68U
3)ERL+AC68U(as AP)
4)AC68U + Unifi AP Pro?

Firstly, it's really depends on your budget.

1). ERL - You will need to use ERL-POE (Power over Ethernet) + power adaptor/injector to power the Unifi AP PRO (N mode only) (ceiling mount/wall mount) so LAN cabling is required (surface/concealed) depending on how many APs you want to deploy. Centralised software management for the Unifi AP PRO can be done via ERL-POE. ~ second most costly.

On top of it, you must be pretty knowledgeable in CLI in Linux/EdgeOS (EdgeOS is a fork and port of Vyatta 6.3) to configure the ERL-POE/Unifi AP PRO - DIY or get someone to do it ~ another cost.

Once you are able to get past the above, your Internet connection will rocks (best WAN-LAN routing performance. WiFi performance is subjective depending on how many APs are deployed)

2). ASUS RT-AC68U - most direct way to setup and providing WiFi and cost the least. (Second best WAN-LAN routing performance). Most users will be opting for this. IPv6 is working for SingTel/M1/StarHub, ViewQwest IPv6 compatibility testing is still in progress. (I'm involved) Dual WAN - failover works only on USB 3G/LTE modems but load balancing is out.

As for MR IPv6, it should be still in testing phase from last i heard from my sources (I'm not involved)

3). ERL + ASUS RT-AC68U (AP) ~ Second most users opt for this combo when they are on ViewQwest Fiber, Static IPv6 works, Dual WAN - failover/load balancing works

As usual, ERL needs in-depth CLI configuration.

4). ASUS RT-AC68U + Unifi AP PRO ~ worst combo among all, ASUS RT-AC68U LAN ports are not POE, you will need to get a separate POE device to power the Unifi AP PRO and LAN cabling works as well. Need a PC to centralized software management control too for the Unifi AP PRO ~ most costly IMHO

Hidden tigers, please feel free to add if i have miss out anything ;)

Budget not so much, as it's my home as well as office (study), so got to do it properly.

I'm not versed in CLI, unless the VQ guys can help. haha.

Considering the ac68u to be the simplest option, but it seems in the past few pages it seems to suffer from reliability issues.

Sounds a lot worse than what I've faced so far with the Zhone as a main router and a TP-Link as a secondary router (except this one's wifi keeps dying having to reset.)

You can always get VQ to assist you in setting up the ERL (if you are planning to get with the ASUS RT-AC68U as AP) and it's allows you to plan the placement of the ASUS RT-AC68U as centralised of your house as possible.

Or just the ASUS RT-AC68U will suffice :p just use RMerlin's firmware for more fixes and enhancements.

For ASUS RT-AC68U/ASUS RT-AC66U/ASUS RT-N66U users,

It is true with my laptops with Intel ac 7260 (both hmw and m.2). With antenna arrange in a W formation on my ac68u, I get 700mbps. Straighten it vertically gives me 867 Mbps consistently.

Guess 3 sticks straight up makes them look like joss sticks and Chinese don't like it.

even if that is so, you can make it at 45degrees at each other to avoid the upright position?

anyway, don't put it in front of a photo lor...

Hi all,

I just bought ASUS RT- AC68U and cannot aquire internet after connect to my ONT( Starhub). Any advise on the setting for the router?

Prefer not to apply Starhub Direct ONT and bridging.

Thank you!

Hi all,

Sorry if this question has already been asked, really too long a thread to go through.

Is there any advantage to use 2xAC68U with one as a router and the other as a bridge, as compared to using 1xAC68U as router and 1xAC66U as bridge? Both configuration are able to use dual band ac right?

I am currently using a N66U. Is there anyway of reusing it in a router-bridge configuration? I am thinking of AC68U (router) + N66U (bridge). I don't mind using N speeds for a start. Is this configuration able to use dual band N, or rather, is it even possible?

Thanks.

This is definitely possible. I use my old N56U as a wireless bridge for my desktop in my study room (my main router is AC68U). I can easily max out my WAN speed (200Mbps down/up) going thru the wireless bridge so your N66 should be able to do better. EDIT: I don't know about the dual-band, I only use the 5GHz band for the bridge and disabled the 2.4GHz one.

Thanks for your reply.

I think I will go for a AC68+N66 for a start, then migrate to a AC68+AC68 or AC68+AC66 combination in future.

Does manual set the Tx power adjustment setting above the default 80mW really gives a stronger transmission? Meanwhile I still waiting for my 9dBi antennas to come from superpowersupply.com
