Guess, this has been discussed extensive coverage in Apple forum onlines, but just curious has any local guys here manage to upgrade to 16GB? or most of you stick with the 8GB max as per recommended. My mac is crawling..and constantly having rainbow spin wheel ,so slow that it annoys.

Do recommend. thanks
Running on 10.9.5 with 8gb in place at current.

You should upgrade your harddisk to SSD. Can really see the difference. Using a MBP 15" with 4gb ram and samsung ssd. So far so good!

I actually have a mid-2010 i7 upgraded to 8 gigs only. I also have an SSD in it. You may want to look into what may be slowing down your system other than lack of memory.

As for upgrading to 16 gigs...I don't know of anyone who has actually done that.

Thanks for all the replies. my mac just keep having the spinning wheel often switching from apps such as office 2011 to safari / firefox. , am always cleaning junks out into trash and using Omni disk sweeper to maintain files. but somehow still lag from time , just re-install OS to see if its OS issue.

By the way, for all those using mid 2010, what OS are u guys running? did u guys use the latest or stock OS at point of purchase. i guess is snow leopard right?

I believe upgrading to the latest OS for mac is always recommended, and definitely to SSD, the speed difference is heaven and hell experience.

8gb and 16gb ram might not really help, unless you are running intensive memory apps, if not there won't be a speed boost from 8gb to 16gb

May i ask , because im using other mac devices and realise that the upgrade of IOS sometimes will cause the hardware limitation to under perform. Do you feel any of these signs when u upgrade your mac to the latest ?

Never experienced those signs. In fact Yosemite feels quicker and the interface looks better as compared to Mavericks.

You won't gain much performance from memory upgrade. You should instead replace the hard drive with a SSD and you will definitely notice performance boost and increase the lifecycle of your Mac.

I use an early 2011 - 16GB RAM and 256GB M4 SSD. Fitted it myself in March 2012 and still working today.

I needed the RAM then because I used virtualbox to run 3 to 4 VMs for some projects at the same time.

Yosemite does RAM compression quite well, so the SSD is the better investment today.
