my 2011 mbp hangs quite frequent lately and it takes quite some time to boot up. i got to force shut down by holding the power button. i suspect its the HDD problem. as I'm currently under applecare still, can i send it in for a service and swap a new HDD?

please advice.

Of coz! You can either take it to a service centre (eg changi city point, wheellock place) or you can call for onsite where they come your place, test it and if really harddisk will bring back your laptop and once ok deliver to you. It will take at least 1 working day.

AppleCare does not offer onsite for portable computers..

Could be application issue and not hardware related. Anyway, just bring it down to apple authorise service provider to check it out. Make sure you back up your stuff first and if I were you, I would remove all personal/sensitive information as well.
