MBP for mechanical engineering student

Hi all, I’m inclined to getting an i7 hexacore mbp for school and personal use. Mainly using it for daily activities such as watching videos, ms office and school stuff such as ansys, solidworks, python and matlab. I’m hearing a lot that engineering students (especially mechanical) should stick to windows but really thought of trying it out. Please advise, thanks!

Nobody stopping you to buy it if you have the money. Can always install bootcamp anyway.

What I want to know is the compatibility and efficiency of running these programs on mbp. Compatibility such as graphics power, os efficiency and such.

I was an electrical engineering student and I used a Macbook Pro throughout my undergraduate studies. did not face any problems with everything you said except ANSYS (which we all used the school's lab computer) and solidworks (i don't use this as an elec. student)

for some of my engineering software that was Windows-only / too troublesome to find a Mac version, I just used Parallels to run Windows in order to use same software as my friends.

hence, as long as you install Windows for those software, i can't imagine any problems.

I don’t think there’s a need to get Macbook. Is more of want than need.

How can they be a recommendation on which OS you should be using in the pursue of your degree? Not everyone can afford macbook.

Ease of use, probably Macbook
Compatibility with software/ engineering design etc, maybe windows

MacOS is solid for a lot of the non-engineering stuffs you use, and you will enjoy it. Once in a while, you can use Parallels if a software is Windows-only. Quite agree with bockscar’s experience.
