Hi there

I am looking to get a laptop for a family member. Looking for a 15" with 8GB of RAM. SSD not crucial.

Would you all get a Retina or non Retina one at this time? And why?

Thanks for your thoughts!

if SSD is not at the top of your list then go with the MBP.

in my case, i bought a rMBP for the SSD and how much less it weighs against the MBP. retina display was just a secondary consideration for me.

Retina display is not critical unless you really pixel-peep or the regular screen makes you feel uncomfortable looking at it.

Thanks for the comments.

I am actually concerned about the ghosting issues. If not I was thinking of going with the rMBP because of the SSD too. Do you all have problems with the ghosting?

Been reading from Macrumors that there are 2 screen manufacturers - LG and Samsung. LG one got burn-in effects. Have a look at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4342365?start=0&tstart=0 to check.

yea but i also saw one review, not sure same link or what, the image of LG seem better than Samsung

i dont have any issues with my panel. no idea which one is it too and i do not dare to try that software. i worried that initially no problems but after running it, end up have problems... n its not fair to apple too.

no ghosting issue with mine.

how abt just getting the rMBP online.

if no ghosting issue, keep it.

if unlucky enough to get one with ghosting issue, return it within 14 days. and after getting your refund, then settle for a MBP.

Where to return it for Apple online purchases?

i buy the MBP-r but use scale to see more pixel
but then i output to my HDTV and only end up 1080p display
so MBP-r or not to me not important LOL

but the SSD makes hell lot faster than anything else

I took the plunge for the rMBP in the end. Yes you're right, the SSD is blazing!

I just realized that I have nowhere to store my extensive music collection! Is iTunes able to play off an external HDD?

yes, you can store your itunes library in an ext HDD. just be sure to point iTunes to the new location of your iTuneslibrary.itl file, by holding down Option when u first launch iTunes or changing the Media folder location in Preferences > Advanced.

i oso just bought my rMBP retina 13" early 2013

i hack the retention issue. it is normal to have it on ips panel. but i do see some serious case in the net.

i did checker box test on my rmbp, there is slight retention on grey screen but none on white screen.

anyway to the refresh of the hardware, it seems like apple is changing the hardware more freq than ever. the question to all of you is, when do you need one? anyway it will become old once u bought it :D
