I suggest not to upgrade old machines that are running win7 to win10. There's a myriad of issues that can happen. Driver issues for some system components are usually the case.

It's better to buy a new machine with Win10 installed or to upgrade a machine that was built within the last 2-3 years.

Old laptop should downgrade to Chrome OS. Faster. LOL :s13:

Too bad Google doesn't make it available for download and installation like other Linux distributions. Only their Chrome book OEMs have access.

Its been quite flawless for my case when I "upgraded" my HTPC's OS to Windows 10, from Win 7.

I have to say I was quite hesitant initially, but decided to use my HTPC as the pilot for the upgrade.

I've read a bit about upgrading from Windows 7 to 10 and seems positive. Just want to hear any advice from you guys about migrating from 7 to 10 on a laptop. Mine is pretty old already. Just worried that it's gonna be very slow after the migration.

Thanks and cheers.

If you are using Windows 7 on your laptop, I guess upgrading to Windows 10 is okay. Its not as if you are upgrading from XP to Vista and need significant hardware upgrade

Personally, I would stay on Windows 7 for its stability. My laptop which is around 3 years old too have issues with a fresh-copy of Windows 10 (drivers, laggy etc). In the end, I rollbacked to Windows 8.1.

Yes, the Limited Time Free Upgrade is attractive but you need to consider whether it is feasible..

before u upgrade, they actually assess ur current hardware specs to see if u can upgrade to win10. best to try that out first.

Windows 10 is best enjoyed with a SSD upgrade. SSDs are cheap currently. Windows 10 has better driver detection and support than Windows Vista or 8. Most drivers are automatically updated with windows update. The only exception seems to be the on-board memory card readers on laptops. Those you can install the laptop manufacturers driver from their support webpage.

I happen to build a new rig in the last few months running SSD. I notice that on Windows 7 OS, it boots up VERY fast. However, on Windows 10 OS, there is noticeably slower than Windows 7 boot up.

As what others has advised, Windows 7 for older machine. Newer machine can try running Windows 10.

I'm wondering if I get another harddisk and clone my laptop. Upgrade. If performance no good, I swap back to the old harddisk. Will this work ?

Should not have issues.
However like how I would recommend to all forumers - do a back up of all important documents onto an ext drive and do a fresh install after you upgraded
