Hello guys, first time traveller, is it possible to get mileage card? I saw JAL has one, I'm taking JAL round trip to Tokyo this year.

Planning to visit japan again in future so thought why not get a mileage card. any tips on which to get?? would the basic one suffice?

There are no obstacles to getting a mileage membership with most if not all airlines. There are tiers of memberships with different levels of benefits that comes with the amount of mileage you accrue.

Star Alliance, OneWorld and SkyTeam are the 3 alliances around. JAL is part of OneWorld. You may want to consider an alliance/airline that offers you more options when making a redemption or one where you can foresee yourself more likely to frequent in future.

Look closely at your booking class, it will also indicate the miles you will earn for this round trip.

In Singapore, there are also various credit cards that can bump up your miles with renewal or sign up bonus but these miles are for redemption but are not taken into consideration for membership status.

Have fun!

I use Citi PremierMiles, in my opinion it's the best all-rounder (there are other cards that have higher mileage earn rate for specific purposes). I swipe every single thing to the card (even go Subway and McD), and as far as possible I take advantage of Kaligo, Expedia, Agoda 6-10 miles/$. End up earn rate is about 100k miles per year which is enough to redeem me & my wife 1 way SQ suites to Tokyo.

Anyway, to add on to what LSF said, what you need to really do is to choose one alliance and stick to it. For me I choose KrisFlyer (SIA) / StarAlliance because I prefer to redeem on SQ flights. But if your personal travel pattern makes more sense to redeem on OneWorld or SkyTeam then there's nothing wrong with choosing that alliance either.

For JAL you can get the basic one if you travel frequently on Oneworld airlines. For me I got JFC after getting the basic JAL card, that was after some calculation on mileage I could accrue since I was doing a family trip last year.

The mileage pooling from JFC makes it easy to accrue if you frequently travel as a family.

I own a few cards just for the purpose of accruing bonus miles on sign up and renewal.

For spending, it's all onto the ANZ travel card for earn rate, redemption (blocks of 5000 miles) and usually when I book air tix and hotels I tend to spend enough to qualify for a complimentary airport transfer. The lounge access for ANZ is pretty crappy though but I do get other lounge access from other CCs. Make the best use of the benefits of the cards.

As for accruing mileage, I focus on Krisflyer/Star Alliance. Krisflyer when flying SQ has pretty bad mileage accrual unless you're paying a full fare ticket. I tend to fly on other *A partner airlines for work such as UA to the US which has 100% accrual. Airline is crappy but allows me to quickly accrue mileage for leisure.
