Hi again Gurus here!

Am planning to get a replacement for my wife's PC. She is very light user, only surf, internet banking, and occasionaly VPN to office to do some work (which essentially just running IE). Currently, she has an old ThinkPad T61 and also using my old PC connected to a 24"inch monitor.

My option will be
1. Get a new laptop for her.
2. Get a mini PC and connect it to the existing monitor.

My preference is leaning towards mini pc, but I am not sure which one to go to. The recent Intel Compute Stick seems sleek but out of stock. I don't really need to go that tiny as well.

Anyone can recommend a suitable mini pc? Thanks!

Please do consider this....

Get this:

PC: Zotac ZBOX ID18 Plus @ $259^ (Lazada Singapore)
RAM: Crucial DDR3-1600 CL11 2GB [SO-DIMM] @ $25 (Tradepac)

Total: $284

^Price after Lazada 10% discount (TBA later)

15% discount also possible on weekend....

And your parents will leave inheritance to you. :s13:

This PC comes with:
Intel Celeron 1037U
2GB RAM
64GB SSD
Windows 8.1

No need to worry about video playback it will even play Youtube 1080p60 very fine....

I've used a underclocked Celeron G1610 to match this Zbox's performance, together with 4GB RAM and 60GB SSD. It works very well, around 30-50% load.

After adding in shipping, conversion and GST, it will be very expensive already.

SLS Cybermind are also selling some of the Intel NUC models. But those will cost $600-700 (about 3 times the one i've suggested) yet only delivering insignificantly more performance.

I did consider that but the main reason I decided against is the price. She likes bigger screen so I need to look at 17inch laptop, these are costly. Comparatively, I can get a pc and a monitor at maybe less than half the price.

Yeah true, mm or you can get a small and portable laptop, but use back the screen previously. Just that she has to sacrifice when carrying the laptop around. Make sure the laptop has the necessary ports to connect to the 24" monitor

Sent from Voyager using GAGT

Intel Compute Stick wouldn't be fast enough for light usage under Windows. Unless she wouldn't mind a bit lag here and there.

It's a pity then, the stick is really nice in size.

I'll continue to scout around, just found out my new place I may not have space for long table like I have now (2.4M). It's going to be around 1.5M, this is going to force me to reconsider laptop again... Really #FirstWorldProblem...

Now have confirmed need to get laptop as new place no space for permanent monitor. Saw Lenovo G7070 @ Newstead selling $1,099. Anyone has better options? Didn't manage to find much review on this model.

Ps: my wife insist big screen so only can get 17inch.

buy a laptop around 1000-1200 then connect to a monitor in home usage with 2 screen multi task etc. then if travelling also can bring along the laptop. I think this is nice solution.

based on my observation

so far the following BRANDs are cheaper

1. DELL (my set bought from Malaysia, warranty no issue here)
2. ASUS (Intl Warranty)
3. APPLE

Usually the warranty is international or not ah?

If buy in bolehland, local service centres will recognise the warranty and accept for servicing or not?

ASUS definitely is intl warranty unless stated.

DELL i tested myself personally, it works. They don't even ask where i bought it from. I will simply say Singapore if required. You can read up more here

Anyway, from my understanding - even if you order from DELL Singapore, the goods come in from Malaysia bore the same Service/Serial Tag as the Malaysia goods.
