Mini PC

Hi,

Anyone got any recommendation for mini PC (Windows OS)? Those small box type cpu. My budget is around $300. Want to buy it for my kids.

Basic usage: watch videos (YouTube, streaming), FB, do project (MS Words, excel, ...), access web apps. The mini PC must have VGA slot (for my 32" old LCD).

But do u have those HDMI to VGA cable?? If u can work with those would be the best else u will need a device to work ur way for ur LCD

By the way, I try to avoid using convertor as sometime they don't work well.

If your 32" LCD is those HD-Ready TV, use the money to upgrade the TV first.

Also, DVI to VGA passive converter works because there are actually VGA analogue pins on the DVI connector. HDMI doesn't.

But from what I know of mostly current mini PC are only able to output HDMI, other than that u can't do much about it.

Hmm.. VGA mini PC a little hard to find.... Most mini PC are on HDMI connection. Those that I saw before.. Don't your TV have hdmi connection? Only VGA?

Yah most mini box don't care what OS. They are 90% HDMI output.

Many of DVI connectors on these mini PCs are of DVI-D standard and not DVI-I, hence they can only output digital signal and cannot be converted into analogue signal without active adapter.

See how the DVI connector found on these mini PCs omit the four pins around the linear hole on the left.

I would rather suggest TS to get a HDMI switch (if his HDTV HDMI ports are insufficient for all his HDMI devices) than getting a brand new TV, especially when cost effectiveness is paramount in his situation as seen.

Even though ASUS VM42 uses newer Intel Haswell-based Celeron 2957U 1.4 GHz, CPU-wise it won't perform better than Ivy Bridge-based Celeron 1037U 1.8 GHz. It also comes with a meagre 2GB RAM + 32GB SSD (over 8GB RAM + 64GB SSD on Zotac ID18 Plus).

Thank you everyone for your recommendation. Seem like it is a better option to get a new small LED/LCD TV with HDMI connector. Thus, any recommendation if I upgrade my TV and up my budget to $500 for the mini CPU.
