And what gpu do i need? Is r9 290 or rx580 strong enough? Or vega 56?

Amd don't cut it for 1080p 144hz AAA Titles gaming. For between 100-120 fps, the R5/R7 2nd gen with some overclock can still do it.

An Intel i5-8600K/9600K is the minimum for an enjoyable experience, but it's not cost effective. The most feasible is i7-8700K/9700K, but that's even worse for cost efficiency.

For gpu wise, I don't think any Radeon GPU is up to the task. Minimal is Vega 56 with quite a bit of graphical settings compensation. Maybe play at around medium-high settings. Vega 64 should be better, but the power consumption and cost is another consideration.

Also, you missed Black Friday from Newegg, where AMD parts had a HUGE discount. R7 2700 @ $300 something and Vega 64 @ $550 something.

Minimum vega 56 or better choice is 1070ti or higher. A Gtx 1080 is ideal.

R5 1600 is still powerful enough to handle a gtx 1080 so you're not bottlenecked cpu-wise.

I have a Freesync 2 monitor that supposed to give smooth framerates, it's 3840x1080 (twice a 1080P monitor) it's rated at 48Hz to 144Hz. I've been maxing out games, like Strange Brigade (with just a single RX VEGA 64, my Red Devil died, so kena RMA) at Ultra setting, maxed everything and I get about 70fps. Honestly, I don't see any tearing or jittering or stuttering at all, absolutely smooth! And Strange Brigade requires me to run around, jumping, rolling and shooting at various zombies and mummies and whatnot. Mind you, all this with an archaic i7 3960X.....

That's a tradeoff you have to make.
A rx580 can barely even hit 80fps at 1080p on current and yesteryear triple A titles. A gpu at that price point is ideal for 60hz 1080p but definitely not 144hz 1080...

Not all can run at 144fps. Go see Gamers Nexus/Hardware Unboxed reviews & games testing result charts.

I'm using Ryzen 1700. Not all games can go above and beyond 100fps. It's about 100-120 fps for just about slightly more than a handful of AAA title games at reasonable settings. Don't tell me to run low/medium low settings just to get that 144fps. It's about balancing the rig specs to achieve decent gaming experience on a 144hz monitor, not compromise everything just to get fluid graphics experience.

Not all would agree, but Intel still reign supreme on high fps/hz gaming. If you do other productivity like modeling, rendering, streaming, multimedia editing that's not Adobe Suites stuff, then Ryzen is the deal and a very sweet one. I do occasionally process some videos and editing work, so Ryzen is my kind of thing instead of Intel.

The 1070ti is light years more powerful than the 580. The rx580 = gtx 1060.

You'll be lucky to get even 60 fps on 1080p at high-max settings on AAA games with a 1060. Which makes getting 144hz panel and pairing it with a rx580 or GTX 1060 for the purpose of AAA gaming so. damn. stupid.

Currently playing witcher 3.
Getting 60+fps at max settings without hairworks.
With hairworks enable 50fps or so.
