I was supposed to board a flight today.. but the coach that I took to get me from London city central to gatwick airport was delayed due to traffic by 90 minutes. As a result I missed my flight and has to rebooked etc. Initially I allowed a gap of 90 minutes instead of the usual 2 hours because it was a non peak time at 4pm and it's a small airport. I wonder if the travel insurance will compensate me in this case? has anyone encountered a similar situation as me?

which insurer ? need to read their policy wording to see if "Travel Misconnection" cover is provided

is the coach a form of "public transport" ?

From Sompo:
"Travel Misconnection
If You arrive late at the overseas transfer point due to delay of the Public Transport which You are travelling and You
missed Your onward travel connection, We will pay You a cash benefit provided there is no other alternative onward
transportations available to You within six (6) consecutive hours."

But the benefit is only $300 max & need a 6hr delay to trigger.

Normally they will need document from the letter of confirmation that there is a delay in the coach if not is hard to claim.

You were rebooked at no cost by the airline ? If yes, then travel insurance will not re-imburse you anything.

If you were rebooked at your own expense, you may keep the receipt to try and ask for compensation. But you need to get written letter / time chit / email from the coach company stating that bus was delayed by traffic and reaching Gatwick at XXX timing.

You would need to have a black and white proof by the coach company
stating the time of departure and arrival

best is to call the travel insurance to find out yourself ...
We can only speculate, may not give you the best answer

I need to rebook at additional cost plus accommodation.. I guess there's no way to find out until I'm back to submit the claim. Thanks guys!

The guide on Gatwick's site.

Long-haul flights: check-in opens four hours prior to scheduled departure
European flights: check-in three hours before scheduled departure
UK and Ireland flights: check-in two hours prior to scheduled departure

You buffer 90 mins. Did you also buffer in traffic delay? If I'm taking transport on the road, ie not metro, I will usually buffer at least 1.5x the amount of time required. Did the coach website stipulate the estimated arrival time at the airport or provide a guideline of how much time is required to get to Gatwick?

I had a recent flight at CDG (within Europe). I booked the bus that's arriving the airport 4 hours prior to my flight departure. Well, the bus was delayed (late in arriving at the pickup point) due to an accident. Then, I still had plenty of time for my flight.

Yea.. the coach did give an estimated arrival time which is 90 mins before my flight departure.. I thought even there's delay it will perhaps take another 30 mins.. but didn't expect it to be way over delayed till more than an hour..

I think u under estimate. How come u never think of getting a cab when bus is 30 mins late or to call bus co to check if bus coming

Pls update again on the claims. Like to see if they allow claims
But I think it's quite low chance since u didn't provide enough time too
To arrive two hours before. U allocate 1.5hrs
That time I took cab to Paris cdg. The q to claim tax is cutting the time to board plane
Last few to board n we r running
Next time I'm going to provide more hrs to arrive earlier because not every airport so efficient like Singapore

we missed our scoot flight at Taoyuan last year due to under estimate of traffic timing too. Another reason is I actually did receive a delay 30min flight notification to my hp from scoot, did screenshot it, and we just missed it by 15min. We ran and approached to a off-duty staff, but they don't entertain and not aware to the delay notification.
Back to sg, both scoot and insurance don't honor anything as they claimed there is no flight delay :(
Last min re-purchase tickets are limited and exp, ended up we had to fork up a sum of 5 tickets at own costs!

No matter the flight cancelled or delayed, you still must reach the airline counter at the original departure time ...
your case, travel insurance wont compensate
to get compensation for flight delay, your need at least 6 hours to claim from your travel insurance. not forgetting the airline letter to support ...

For jetstar, they would close the counter 45min before departure timing
few times reached 1 hour before departure ... they allowed us to get in

Scoot very strict one ...
have seen their staff confiscate people's macdonald fries on their flight before ... tats why usually would always fly jetstar, not scoot ..
scoot pricing always attractive for bangkok ...
taipei not so ...
