Hi Guys, can't seem to find anything on this in the search function so starting this thread.

Long story short - I've 1L of Motul 300V 5W-30 oil left from the previous oil change. Would prefer to get 2L of the same brand but at 5W-40 for the next oil change (cheaper). Is it advisable/any harm in mixing the different viscosities?

Google has mixed opinions. Not good at these stuff so appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance!

As far as 'I' know, no harm ba but I too will not feel 'comfortable' as later if there is any issue, you may link yourself about it.
As a phase said; 'pound foolish, penny wise'?

So if want to play safe, just change 3L of of 5W-40?
The price of 1L more will not break your wallet?

Using thicker oil (W40) than recommended, fuel consumption may suffer a little but should not do any harm. However, if you are using thinner oil (W30) than recommended (high compression/turbo engines require W40 or higher), it may cause more engine wear and tear.

Mixing engine oil is not advised but should not do any harm as long as meet the engine requirements.

Hope this helps. :)

Thanks for the replies! I'll probably buy another 2L can of 5w-30 to finish the remainder in stock (only need 3L). Will get the 5w-40 next time. My car manual recommends 5w-40 but I've been using 5w-30 for some years and no problem so far - B&B car, normal NA engine.

Yeah abit of an overkill but it seems to have better response as compared to oils like Shell Helix and Mobil Gold, maybe a placebo effect though. Lol

I agree.

Mixing of engine oil is not advisable but it might be pretty unlikely to cause any harm.
