In my opinion and standard, If harddisk is more than 2-3 years old. I would change it. You still can reuse it as a storage disk(secondary, non-OS).
The rest should able to reuse. If your DVD Drive is IDE then might have compatibility issues as newer mobos don't have IDE interface.

can you tell us what does your dad do w/ pc?

watch movie, office work, rendering of video(video editing...photoshop)...etc

Then if that is the case i3 is also an overkill for your dad liao.

An intel Celeron is more than enough for your dad to do everything he needs to do.

Asrock b75m DGS + intel Celeron G1060 ~ $119
Kingston Value Ram 4gb ~ $49
WD Blue 1tb ~ $81

The rest of the items can just reuse.

How is the performance of Celeron + b75? If it beats p5k+e7200 then okay.

most Hard disk last 3-5 years. some longer(this is considered a bonus).

if it is old, chances are it will fail. Sometimes when getting a new pc, changing harddisk is a good time because even if u use back your old harddisk, u still need to reformat due to the drivers.

If u use back your old harddisk and boot up with the new mobo and stuff, you won't even make it to desktop. you will just get bsod because of the wrong drivers...etc.

in my opinion that new harddisk investment will help you get a problem free com for a few years(assuming all hardware is ok).
