Mobo, PSU or?

Hi everybody, my desktop started to hang everytime I on-ed it for few minutes. The screen just freezes there and I have to hard resetting it everytime it happens.

I can't do system restore as it just hangs halfway through it.

Should I just change the whole mobo or try other fixes? =/

Try to use one piece of ram. If still the same, swap the ram.

could you provide more information?
1. when did u notice this happened? meaning when it happened are u particularly opening a certain program? or moving the table abit? etc

2. when it is hanged, do u notice anything making more noise than usual? eg, hard disk spins louder, ticking sound from hard disk. is the com power still on when it happens etc

3. what happens when u on back? does it on normally and hangs after few min? or decides to hang during loading?

4. what parts do u have to troubleshoot as replacement? if possible could you post ur mobo model and cpu so we knw if u can do onboard display to troubleshoot ur gpu

Hi, to give more context. It will just hang around 10 minutes of running after booting up, no matter what program it's running or not running anything at all. It just freezes there and I will have to hard-reset it, and it will boot up and run as per normal for another 10 minutes or so then everything repeat again.


There's no unusual sounds coming from it when it freezes and my family only uses it for general web surfing and ms office applications. There's no BSOD so I dont think there's any issue with my SDD and HD (hopefully not).


My mobo model should be ashrocks H81 if I remembered correctly, gotten it a couple of years back. This issue has been happening since 1 years plus ago, I have been procrastinating on solving it till now. =/

hang but mouse can move?

not saying this is definitely the same case for u but, my ssd last time died on me like this. mouse still can move, but all windows unresponsive. no bsod as well.

if u have ssd + hdd, and windows running on ssd, can also consider clear items in ur hdd and clone ur ssd contents over to hdd and continue using as per normal.

do u have dedicated gpu? if ur setup gt onboard graphics and intel gpu, can take out graphics card and see if issue persist as well.

if possible can monitor ur cpu temp. cpu give way and hang when it hits a certain temp thats too high.

I can tell you, it's your ASS-ROCK board.

I have a Asrock H81 and the QC of ASRock is trash.. never going to an ASRock board again

issues for ASRock boards I have faced

RAM Slot faulty/Cold boot startup issues

Symptoms looks like mobo issue. And seeing that it's a asrock motherboard it is even more likely. Motherboard issue can cause symptoms such as computer freezes completely and not responding. Random restart and reboot loop etc.

Personally having issues with my old asrock b75 pro3m also with reboot loop issue. Since then have ban all purchase of asrock motherboard already. I only dare to buy asus, gigabyte or msi mobo only.

2nd likely issue could be a faulty ram or psu issue. Just swap and check and see if issues gone.

Likely something to do with your ram slot, perhaps faulty capacitor or power controller or any chips related to the ram. Reseating ram then booting up repeatedly several times might lessen the issue

I changed my ram slots (from 1 slot to the other only, haha). Then it ran as per normal and hanged. But the difference is that now my mouse can move, and youtube video is still playing but I can't click anything. Hmmm

Freeze? Software issue mainly... Fresh install windows as tracing the source is annoying, from bad drivers to malware like bitcoin miners. If you have habit of using questionable software, this is where you start...

Less likely is hardware related, namely storage devices or usb devices. Like overheating SSD or dying OS hdd...

Why not bring your system to SLS to check and replace.

for my case i started having files missing, then suddenly cant press anyth on windows but mouse still can move. then all my icons and taskbar all gone.

if u suspect is ram, do memtest over the night just to be safe

Many years, had about the same issue and it was due to a dying boot up hard disk. You might want to investigate your bootup SSD.

Guys, an update. So it turned out to be really the SSD problem.

I installed windows to my HDD and set it as my default boot up disk and everything has been well since then!
