Budget wise total 1.5k-ish. Spend 200 so far so maybe about 500 for mobo?.
Mobo functions just standard stuff, usb 3 etc? 3.1 worth it? Mx100 will only work with sata 3, so m2 doesnt affect its speed right? Maybe somemore sata 3 for possible upgrade in hdd/ssd? Wifi would be good but most important should be able to use all the other components efficiently

At this time m.2 is not matured yet in SG. So the price is very steep. But there is a difference in those 2. 1 that requires no extra SATA cable nor Power cable. The other requires both.

Speed wise m.2 is slightly more faster.

USB 3.0 even the lowest entry board has USB 3.0. Such as ASRock H81m HDS has it.

3.1 is not worth it as of now, there is no device that supports 3.1.

Sata ports usually you will only need this few.

1 for SSD, 1 for HDD, 1 for DVD Drive. At most you will need 1 for SSD and 2 for HDD.

In all minimum is 4 SATA ports.

Most WIfi capable mobo is actually just a add on wifi card, which can be separate purchase.

To classify your needs, at most is a ASRock H81m HDS, MSI B85M G43, MSI B85 G43 Gaming, ASRock B85 Pro 4.

There is no need for a Z97.

Thanks for your recommendations! But the b85 is an older chipset, will i have to upgrade soon in the next few years?

Not necessary. The h97 is a newer chipset that will support the upcoming broadwell processor. But however, there is no huge impact of the upgraded CPU. There is no huge performance gain since Sandy bridge days. You can still use haswell processor with the older chipset till the day where skylake launches. Which will be at least 2 years by then.
