Hi all expert,

I would like to upgrade my father desktop.

His PC is Acer Aspire series X 1200.
I don't know what is his mobo, but his CPU is AMD athlon (tm) 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 4200+

I am curious whether i can replace his mobo to ASUS B85 Tropper.

Kindly advise.

Expand all options in Device Manager and screenshot here.

And if you want to change motherboard to that one, you also need to change almost everything else...

Wow. That's close to ten years liao, better just rebuild from scratch. Current tech can let you have similar horsepower but with much less electricity needed.

What's your dad's requirements? Any budget to work with?

Only things that can be reused is the HDD and the ODD from what I am seeing. But even then, I don't think it is a good idea to reuse a 10 year old HDD that can fail any time due to wear and tear issues.

Also, nope, PSU not reusable due to same reason. Casing is maybe though, but quite small lah :s13:

Short answer, no.

The Asus B85 Trooper is for Intel processors.

As others have mentioned, there is no point in upgrading such an old PC. If costs is a consideration, you can consider replacing the MB + CPU with a second-hand Intel 775 setup for about $60 or less, keeping all other parts.

Thank you all for the comment.

I think i should just buy a laptop for my dad. I think 400-500 notebook is worth rather than build from scratch.

So far from what i survey, if i change the mobo, only the HDD is usable, but only 80GB.

Hi All HWZ bros,

Refer to my dad's spec below.

The situation now is like:

1. The PC will blue screen and restart itself.
2. The PC will hang, but all the lights is still on (speaker lights, mouse, keyboard, etc)
3. The PC will black out, with all the lights is still on, but after i press RESET button, the PC light will on and *Beeepp* like normal we turn on the PC for the first time, but only for few seconds and it like hibernate, but not working anymore.

To solve this problem, i need to unplug the power cable from PC and turn off the PSU for around 30mins - 1 hour. After that i turn everything on and it will be like normal.

My question is... What happened with my dad's PC and which hardware was the main reason?

Depend what you dad need. if normal surfing. just get a tablet.

If you have spare hdd, take your OS hdd, put in your hdd and install linux. Do some stress test. If still same problem. Than can be motherboard or power supply

$500 can get a PC actually. If size and mobility not a concern, don't get the cheap laptop because it will only feel sluggish very soon.
