frankly its even more practical if u dun install the aircon in the 1st place.. save even more... :s22:
In a way, it is true but when u need it, u then consider, might be too late.

For my house, I install a 300+ window type, instead of those 3000+ type. Imagine, save some 2700, assume interest rate of 2%, annually u have $54. This is more than enough during the may-jun period of every yr.

here is wat i do.... i have a few laptops around the house... charge them fully while using it... once it 100% charged... switch the power off.. u will have 2 - 3 hours of batt before u need a charge again.
Not advisable cos yr battery life-span will be reduced. Li-Ion battery should always be kept fully charged or 80% or as much as possible. Li-Ion life is about 300 charge and fully recharge cycle. Keeping the battery cool will help extend its life as well.

My company notebook is fully charged before I bring home. Last me about 3.5hrs.

Errrr...
Would it be less efficient to do that, as compared to just directly plug into mains w/o battery?

Considering that when you convert electrical energy to chemical energy (mains to battery) and vice versa (battery to electrical), there will be a loss in energy during the conversion.
U are right. It is not a wise move.

just a point here, i know of my colleague who always switch on his router and modem for his broadband. it will consume electricity but he said it is convenient as and when he can use it. but i think it is wiser to switch off when not in use which is what i am doing. anyone can have better idea to share on saving electricity for this case?

Yr method is good enough. Mine is BBoM on my mobile phone, so no such issue.

Think I read before somewhere that switching electrical appliances on and off too often will cause them to spoil faster.

oops, maybe i missed it, sorry.

i ever heard that if you switch on the light in a room, kitchen, toilet...etc for a short while to do something and then switch off immediately, thinking that it can save electricity bill this way but in exact fact, the switch on and switch off will cause even more waste of electricity amount due to the flow of current. i agree here but if switch on for too long will cause more electricity used, if switch on for a short while and off, it will also waste electricity bill...so dilenma... can anyone help me with this problem? thanks.

I personally think for modems and routers it is alright cos energy consumption is very high.

Lights maybe if like 10 minutes or so not in use then off?

There is no dilemma at all. U need the light to see, so u need to turn it on. Save those devices turn on unnecessarily for 24hrs like mio modem, router, modem, etc.

For my kitchen, I hv a motion sensor LED lamp that light up 15 sec for short trip to kitchen and a 24 white LED lamp on AA battery for a slightly longer trip. Reason is because I find my kitchen lamp too bright.

Just replace all the house lamp with florenscent ones.

I went to hardwareshop to get all the neccessary stuff and install myself. Actually it very simple to do one, go national library and borrow books from the "home and garden" section.

Because I got lots of free time, I read up lots of books and now I know how to install ceiling lamp, shower heater, shower curtain and mirror and also change door locks. :s13:

Change bulb lamp to energy savings lamp, not fluorescent cos energy savings lamp 25W is equivalent to 100W bulb brightness. ntuc homeproud brand will do cos cheap and good (mine is 5yrs+ already) and have not change once at all.

Fluorescent lamp lifespan is shorter.

Dont surf the net will also save you some electricity. Give up internet and you save the subscription. Two of my friends holding some mid-level position also do not own handphone.

Philips Spot-On LED is 19.90 (but can be bought at around 16.90 at Carrefour or promo 14.90). U need 3 AAA though but I build my own battery pack using Li-Ion handphone battery pack. Some discussion at See http://www.renotalk.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=5284.

Shopping can make use of credit cards as discount cards and never pay annual fees. Carrefour / Everyday cc 5% rebate is well known. Cold Storage also has 5% cash rebate with Maybank Friends and Family cc (auto calculated discount off your cc bill) and even covers some NTUC branches (Airport ones and the Orchard-Killiney branch near my place).

OCBC Robinson's cc also 5-10% cash rebate. Very useful when you find good sales like in their medical and pharma dept.

If converting cc points, exchange them for something useful like shopping vouchers instead of yet another talking lava lamp.

thanks. i think using 3 AAA battery maybe estimated to cost more than building your own battery pack. can you share on how to make your own battery pack? is it possible to use in other applicances?

Dont croon, sing, whistle or karaoka when taking shower. A study in Australia mentioned that they will save water and electricity if the Australians stop such toilet habits. :s13:
