Advise on issue with monitor & 64-bit Windows

Hi guys,

I just bought a Philips 239C4QHSW IPS LED monitor. The trouble is, it shows up as a "Generic PnP Monitor" on device manager in Windows, and the display and colours look quite off.

I've tried downloading the latest monitor drivers from Philips website, and also tried to manually install/update the drivers, but Windows doesn't recognise the drivers. I'm using the latest drivers for my graphics card (MSI Radeon HD7850). My guess is the problem is due to the fact that I'm running Windows 8 64-bit, and the Philips drivers are 32-bit.

Any idea what I can do to resolve the issue? Hope I don't have to switch to a 32-bit Windows O/S, or junk away my new monitor.

You should use the disc comes with monitor to install the driver.

Yes, I have tried using the disc that came with the monitor to install the driver, but Windows 8 doesn't detect the driver. That's why I tried using those on the website, but result is the same..

Normally i just install my graphics drivers.
Didn't even download or install drivers from internet or CD given.
Ta-dah . Runnning at Max resolution already.

Monitors normally dont need drivers to install... Furthermorr urs is a ips panel... Have u tested/seen a live set of the monitor before buying it?

Agreed. Why don't you go sim lim and take a look at the Philips monitors on display opposite Infinity? If the colours are different from yours, you can RMA.

Perhaps the color temperature has been set to something that's not suited to your liking ? That option you should be able to adjust.

The "Generic PnP Monitor" should not be the issue. As long as u install the current graphics driver (whether be it Intel, AMD, ATI, Nvidia etc) the monitor should be displaying properly. If it doesn't then perhaps the monitor has some hardware issue.

Did you use the device manager, select monitor, update drivers and search for inf/all files method? Or search for monitor.inf yourself in the directory right click on it and install.

Monitor "drivers" are just text files, not really important especially if you know its ability and thus able to manually set the resolution/hz in graphic card software for unique display resolution.

Colour temperature can be set in graphic card software through use of EDID.

Only thing you might miss out is the ICC profile, but you can use the other standard profiles like sRGB. If really want that ICC profile, you can find the monitor.icm file , right click and install profile...

there's no .inf file, but whql driver as .cab (.xml, .cat) - i read this can't be used to install...?

Inf file is the most important. It must be somewhere else like DVD disc that came with the monitor.

Even your linked page has this statement "Use the information file (.inf) for Windows XP/Vista/Windows7 or later"

Guess TS need to complain to Philips about this...

After fiddling around further, I realised the problem doesn't lie with the monitor, and is probably due to my graphics card instead.

Basically, I connected the monitor to a laptop running the same OS, and it seems to be working fine without installing any drivers, as what you guys suggested. Strange that I can't install the Philips drivers though.. I'll still like very much to be able to install the drivers if possible.

Anyway, the monitor only has VGA and HDMI connectors, so I tried using a DVI cable with a VGA converter to connect the monitor to the VGA connector of the graphics card. And it seems to be working alright (at least for the few minutes I was testing). I'll test it out more to confirm and update you guys again.

If it's working fine with VGA, wouldn't it be strange for the graphics card to have problems with giving HDMI output but not with VGA?

Thanks! I managed to install the driver for the monitor using your second method. First method didn't work. The colour issue still persists with the updated driver though.

maybe it auto changes the mode depending on hdmi/vga port? ur menu states got "Text, Office, Photo, Movie, Game, Economy" modes and Off. Try toggle thru to see how.
