Monitor for 1440p Gaming

Hi all,

After going to COMEX to scout for new monitors for my upcoming build in November I realised there are quite some choices for monitors and I do not know what to base my choice on. I am getting my monitor at the upcoming SITEX at the expo on November and my budget is around $700. I'll be gaming on 2560×1440 but there are some monitors that are 3440×1440 so what is the difference between the two in terms of gaming? Thanks in advance!

best is Dell 27 inch 1440P 60Hz.
top up another $200 to get Acer 27 inch 1440p 165hz, IPS.
3440 is ultrawide screen

Okay, thank you! There are Prism+ monitors going for the same price but higher refresh rate than a Dell so are those worth getting? Also, for ultrawide does gaming on it require a lot more performance?

Prism+ monitors are korean microboard monitors. If you don't mind that can get it. But if you want good 3 years on site warranty and good quality monitors dell is the monitor to go with it is worth the extra price premium.

As for the 2 resolutions you stated. One is the normal 16:9 aspect ratio the other is 21:9 aspect ratio. For 21:9 is ultrawide monitor when you watch movie there will not be any top and bottom black bar will be immersive and shok when watching movie. But when you watch youtube video there will be black bar beside because youtube video is 16:9 aspect ratio.

I suggest you to get 16:9 monitors because more content and games are suited for that. 21:9 ultrawide screen can very shok and immersive when playing games or watching movies with it but when you watch 16:9 content will have black bar beside which is no good.

Some people use 21:9 ultrawide don't like decide to go back to 16:9 some people like its personal preference.

Hmm alright, but Dell monitors are usually IPS which have a slightly higher than usual response time right? Like generally >5ms. Also what are the downsides to the aforementioned "Korean Monitors"? I walked past Aftershock's booth 2 days back and the monitors look alright but the X315 Pro is a bit big at 31.5 inches.

Don't be confused between monitor resolution and monitor speed
resolution is make the icons smaller or bigger whereas speed is the refresh rate when playing racing games like need for speed

Sorry if I wasn't clear I was asking whether the 2 resolutions would have an impact on gaming (like need a better GPU to run, image quality)? Also, by the way, is 1440p 144Hz worth it right now or stick with 1440p 60Hz?

Basically yeah 3440×1440 will be more graphically demanding then 2560x1440 but usually 4k is the most demanding resolution and will need good expensive gpu for enjoyable frame rate.

Also take note some games might not support ultrawide resolution like the 3440x1440 as in you cannot choose those resolution in game. So have to use normal 2560x1440 resolution and will result in black bar beside the monitor.


As to 1440p 144hz worth or not compare to 1440p 60hz. Best way is to try it yourself 144hz gaming vs 60hz gaming. If you can feel the difference and willing to spend more money and get a good gpu to run at 144hz 1440p go ahead. If no difference to you get the 1440p 60hz and you can save money by buying a cheaper GPU to run at 1440p 60hz and cap the frame rate at 60 frames per second.

1440p @ 165hz requires a beefy gpu to fully utilize the potential. Depends on the game u play also. If u play FPS game maybe minimal a gtx 1070.
If u play AAA games would suggest at least a 1080ti... But even 1080ti might not able to fully pump the 165z @ 1440p.

Strong monitor requires strong gpu.
Strong gpu requires strong psu.
Full potential also requires strong cpu in some games. Its a wicked cycle �

I see, thank you! I usually play singleplayer games like witcher 3 and shadow of war occasionally gta online so I think that 144Hz may not be worth it. Also what is some things I should look out for when buying a monitor? Thanks!

Oh I see, I play a lot of AAA games and I usually play on 30fps previously so I think 60Hz is a smarter investment

Oh den u shld be fine. 60hz is the norm. If u wan maybe can also go for those G-sync (Nvidia) or freesync (amd) monitors.
Its not that costly compare to 145/165hz

Oh, I see, I feel that 32+ inches are too big for me, around 27 inches should be fine. The LG monitor is 1080p though, I am looking out for a 1440p one, but thank you for suggesting!

Don't think there is, all G-Sync and Freesync monitors are high refresh rate ones like 144Hz.

There are G-Sync monitors with 60 Hz (e.g. Acer X34) and 100 Hz (e.g. Acer X34P).
