Just yesterday when I boot up my desktop, my monitor was not able to display anything other than a 'check signal cable' message.

Just changed my mb late last year and gfx card early last year. Tested the monitor with my laptop and there wasn't any issues.

Can anyone advise ?

maybe the output went to your on board vga.

check if your graphics card is seated securely.

if mb cannot detect the card within timeout period, it'll fallback to the on-board vga

ok bought a new vga adaptor and tried and problem still remains.

plug in to the other vga port at the back via direct vga connection and it works albeit much lower resolution.

going to try and resit my gfx card later as what some have suggested.

why do you even need to use a DVI-VGA adapter? plugging the VGA cable direct to the VGA port on the graphics card will give you the exact same results, as both are running off analogue signals. as for the resolution "issue" that you had experienced with connecting direct to VGA port, you just need to adjust the resolution in Windows. Direct connection is better because you have 1 less physical connection to worry about, as any physical connection is prone to oxidation/vibration issues.
