Monitor VGA problem

Hi, I've just built my com today, and I linked my monitor (2-3 years old) with VGA socket with a DVI adaptor into my new com and no visuals are shown on that computer, so i linked up with my HDMI tv from my living room, and it worked out fine. Is there any possible ways for me to still have visuals from my monitor while connected to the new com or do i need to buy one?
