Which would be better, a custom built desktop or any brand of desktop or what good gaming laptop brands are there? My friend just bought an Aftershock laptop recently, he's pretty happy with it. My only worry with laptops is I tend to game for long hours so overheating is a big problem. I was also considering Asus.

Some background on the situation, can skip if you're lazy to read my long explanation/problem with current laptop.

I own a 2 year old Alienware M17x that seems to have had a lot of problems, it over heats easily, keyboard not working (had to purchase external keyboard) and sound problems. My customer service experience with Dell has been really bad, like while trying to help me fix my sound, he told me to update my Bios and the whole laptop crashed because apparently it was incompatible or something. So from a usable com without sound, the whole com couldn't use anymore.

I know for some of the simpler problems like keyboard and overheating, there are some articles that advise DIY cleaning of the fans and plucking out the keys replacing the stuff etc... but I'm pretty much a tech noob. I thought buying the most expensive laptop would = something that would last long or have good customer service but it isn't so. In the end, a friend managed to get the com running again for me but after awhile, some hardware issues resurfaced. Said friend says he doesn't dare take a look at the hardware issues cause it's delicate and if he does something wrongly whole thing will spoil.

Game-wise, not looking for anything too hardcore. Just Dota2, left4dead 2 etc with regular graphics etc is fine, just want it to run smoothly. My alienware now can't even get through 1 game of dota without automatically shutting off.

In any case, is it worth it to get the laptop fixed? Dell basically haven't been helpful, I asked the customer service guy where to get it fixed and he referred me back to the merchant or something :/ so I would have to get it fixed privately. But seems pretty mafan so I've considered getting a custom built desktop or buying a new laptop/desktop, aftershock etc.
