omg guys help!!! I am absolutely confused about which motherboard to choose!
I am not sure because I've seen people post on forums that some motherboards are overpriced/have features I don't need. Btw I'm looking for red/black themed boards haha. The budget doesn't matter cos I will spend extra money if it's worth it.

ASrock B85 Killer
Asrock h97 fatality performance
Asrock H97 Killer
Msi h97 gaming 3

I am using an i5-4460 processor. No over-clocking or video-editing etc. My rig is completely for gaming. My rig includes:

-CORSAIR 200R
-G.Skill RipJaws-X DDR3-1600 CL9 8GB Dual Channel Kit
-Toshiba 1TB 7200RPM
-FSP Aurum S 500w
-Dell S2340L 23"
-Asus PCE-N15 wifi card
-ZOTAC GTX 970 4GB TWIN FAN $459
-Crucial MX100 256GB $143

Thanks!!!

If you do not intend to set up a RAID array, the Asrock B85 Killer or the MSI B85-G43 Gaming would do. Can also search for an Asrock H87 Performance or an Asus B85 Pro Gamer if the other B85 boards are OOS.

So let's say I want to install my operating system on an SSD and put my movies/games on a HDD, which RAID array would that be? Also, B85 motherboards cannot setup RAID array is it? :O
That is not a RAID array and you do not need a RAID array for these things. It will not matter if a B85 motherboard can't support RAID if using a SSD for OS and HDD for storage.

I see. Thanks so much!!

Haha anyway, why do you want to raid? Normally people raid for certain reasons.

For example in raid 0, normally people would go for cheaper ssds with lower read write speeds to boost the performance. For example, my 2x240gb intel ssds (after raiding) would give me a single 480gb partition with a better read write speed. However, because it is a single partition, if one of the ssd fails, the whole 480gb partition fails and everything will be gone.

For raid 1, people use it more like a back up type of raid due to its mirroring property. Because of this property, 2x240gb will become a single 240gb partition only. Though this is so, it provides a certain level of protection on data because when one disk fails, the other copy is valid on the other disk.

To have the best of both world, you need raid 10. But this type of raiding is the most exp kind. You need at least 4xdisks to create a /2 partition. For example, I need 4x240gb to give me a single 480gb partition.

Hope this helps to clarify your doubt.

If you want to use raid 0 partition for your os drive, you have to ensure that your choice of hds/ssds have a fairly low failure rate based on reviews because raid 0 increases the failure rate of the partition by another 50% due to the element of another disk.

You can use the windows 7 (pro) raid [not recommended], intel rapid storage technology [moi using] or an external raid card for raiding. External pcie raid cards are the best but decent ones are not cheap . They have their own hardware controllers for speed boost and can support many more disks.

Although it is just $10 away from those gaming standard mobos. I wouldnt mind recommending a h97 gaming 3. It will be good IF BW is gonna be able to use on h97 z97 chipset.

I don't know about you, but I would rather use that $10 to get a better quality PSU.
