Motherboard failure?

Hi,

I have been using my PC for the past 2 years and it is working fine. Recently, my hand itchy and remove the fans for cleaning. I am not sure what have I done, and since then, it will always power off once I power on, and then it will power on by itself again. After that, the PC will function well. If I do not switch off the power supply to the PC, it will be start off fine.

I have tried resetting the CMOS (removed battery and power supply), connect up only to the bare minimum, even removed the Graphics Card and RAM, but it will still power off and power on again.

Would like explore what the possible defects.
1) Motherboard battery is getting weak, cannot remember the last system status?
2) RAM faulty? I quite doubt this case, as the system has not even go into POST yet, and it is able to restart can detect the RAM correctly.
3) Graphics Card faulty? I quite doubt this case as well, as everything can be displayed fine.
4) Power Supply?
5) Motherboard is dying? Reason to upgrade, , and quite sad to change system, it is still very new!

CPU Brand : Intel Model : i5-750 Speed : 2.8GHz
Operation System : Win 7 64-bit SP :

If you do a shutdown in Windows and it auto power up again then it's PSU problem.

Before you do anything to the PSU, try swaping the RESET SW to the POWER SW jumper on the motherboard. Use the reset switch to power up your comp and see if the problem goes away. If not, high chance is the PSU issue.

The LED blip for a second then goes off whenever I push the button, same for fans from MOBO and graphics card. After 3 to 5 seconds the LED blip and fan start running. And then goes off again. So it goes in cycles on and off on and off. To end this cycle, I have to press and hold the power button till the cycle stops.

I have not touch anything inside the CPU since last year to clean the fans..

Any idea where should I start troubleshoot?

i had same problem. PC has to struggle to start up.

3 possibilities : mobo, ram or PSU.

I plucked out the ram and brought it to Convergent to test. It's free because they provide lifetime warranty. After testing and certified OK, i brought back the ram and tao it back. Still same problem. That means Ram is eliminated. It is either PSU or mobo.

I keep thinkiing is psu. I plucked out the motherboard and brought it to Nigel. He was kind enough to tell me within one second that a few capacitors is blown. And so i finally managed to isolate the problem

So maybe u all can follow like this and slowly one by one eliminate. Start with the ram as it is easiest, just bring for testing. Then check mobo see whether any capacitors has swollen head. If mobo is ok, then likely is psu.

Alternatively, can just bring the whole PC to Nigel. If he can isolate the offending part, just buy that part from him. His price is exactly same as PC Theme.

I had this problem then i took out the CMOS battery then put it back again then its fine. You could always try that if nothing else works for you.

Haha, forget about the main star....The mamaboard model is GIGABYTE, P55-USB3

when I do a shut down in Windows, it will switch off completely. No restart.

The issue only happen when I switch on the main physical power supply, and then pressed the power Switch on the PC. The power will goes on and then off again. After that, it will proceed as normal.

Thanks for all the kind advices. I tried to apply all that you guys said

poor -> I have 2x2GB ram running on Win 7 Pro

I wasn't sure what happened, I took off the CMOS battery,I even set the jumper wire to clear the data and put it back, I removed 1 slot of ram, I also disconnect and connect back all cables, PCIe slot just to make sure there is no loose connection.

I somehow randomly managed to see somthing on screen. After the BIOS boot, system asked me if I have problems with previous startup and asked if I should boot start normally or to safe mode. Immediately I select safe mode as I want to isolate if its software causing this problem. About a min into safe mode, everything freezes, keyboard and mouse stopped responding. I even notice the storage LED on my casing is not blinking. The small circular hourglass beside my mouse cursor also stop rotating.

Above senario is the furthest and longest my PC could stay awake once it start having problems. Otherwise all other time it just freezed at windows welcome screen, and there was a time when it freezes at BIOS setup. Most common symption is that it just refuses to show me a boot up screen, and the cyclic on and off power.

BTW, my system is exactly 3 year old, I purchased the components in May 2010. Have heard of things failing after warrenty, it just too conicidental. Sigh

Do you guys have any further opinion on this?

Just like to know where is the probably problematic area, and is it possible to change the part. I checked every capacitors, and seems that they are all in tact, maybe my eyes are not trained.

Also, like to know how much will the CPU i-3340 cost, if getting just the CPU alone? Can't fine the price in the price list.

i know what you mean.. that is perfectly normal.. my ASUS board behave like that too..
once the main power is turn off.. when you turn it on.. it will like "warm up" first.. den go ahead turn on.. if the main power is not switched off.. it will just boot.. anyway not like it caused u any problem.. it's normal..

(it's normal dude some board behave that way. i dun think that 10 second caused u a problem how do you confirm it's faulty -.- )

first of you do not use your eyes to see you need a digital miltimeter to check the connection.. if there are like 50 capacitor are you gonna check them all? lol

Also, like to know how much will the CPU i-3340 cost, if getting just the CPU alone? Can't fine the price in the price list.

Lucky for me, I got my brother's rig. I changed my power supply to run only his setup, when I pressed the power on, it will immediate spun into action. It will not power on, and then shut down, and start up again.

Vice Verse, I changed his power supply to run my motherboard, it start up, and then shut down within 1 sec, and startup normally again. Therefore, confirming motherboard is faulty.

As I mentioned in my initial post, the mb is behaving normally, meaning, start immediately after pressing the power on button, until my hand itchy, and clean the system fans, and don't know touch what items to cause it faulty.

Although this do not affect the whole process of using the computer, what I afraid is that it will affect the life of the hdds. Frequent startup and shut down (power surge) of the hdds will affect the life.

Anyway, maybe I am too naive to think that everything can be repair, afterall, they are all make up of electronic parts. I just hope to reduce wastage.
