A married couple has been charged in court after beating up a man and leaving him with severe injuries, including an eye fracture.

According to the prosecutors' statement of facts seen by Mothership, the couple were "already intoxicated" around 3:24am on Jan. 19 when they encountered the victim at a lift lobby of Orchard Plaza.

The husband, Poh Guan Jun, first punched the victim such that he fell to the ground unconscious, then proceeded to kick him repeatedly on the head and face.

The wife, Sherlyn Loh Shin Hwee, kicked the victim's buttocks five times.
On Oct. 7, Poh was sentenced to five months and two weeks in prison, while Loh was fined S$1,200.

The couple were both 30, while the victim, also a Singaporean, was 26.
At the time of the incident, the victim had returned to Singapore from the United Kingdom, where he was studying at university, for the winter break.

Confrontation

Sometime between 12am and 1am on Jan. 19, the couple started drinking with two friends at Orchard Plaza.
Between the four of them, they had about three bottles of Martell.

Despite being "already intoxicated", the group decided to get more drinks at Cuppage Plaza, about a minute's walk from Orchard Plaza, shortly before 3:24am.
They left the club and waited for the lift along with six other people, which included the victim.

When the lift arrived, the other five people got in first.
The victim then tried to enter the lift by walking around Loh, but she stood at the lift door and obstructed his way, letting Poh and her friends enter before him.

Poh also extended his arm to block the victim's entry, but the victim pushed his arm away and seemed to have gone in the lift.
Poh and the victim started shouting at each other, then the victim got out of the lift and pulled Poh out with him.

Escalation

After Loh and their friends joined them back in the lift lobby, the victim stepped away and tried to make a call on his phone.
At this time, Poh went towards him and punched the side of his face, causing him to fall face-first onto the floor and immediately go unconscious.

While the victim lay on the floor, Poh began kicking him in the face and on the back of the head repeatedly.
Two of the kicks were strong enough to send the victim sliding about a metre along the floor.

Loh also "intentionally" kicked the victim on the buttocks five times, according to the prosecutors.
Finally, Poh stepped over the victim and stomped on his head once before the group left the scene.

The victim's injuries

The victim only regained consciousness after they left, at about 3:27am.
There was a pool of blood on the floor where his head was, the prosecutors said.
He was admitted into the emergency department at Tan Tock Seng Hospital about an hour later, complaining of a headache and pain "over his left eye".

A physical examination and computed tomography (CT) scan found that he had five injuries, mostly involving his left eye.
They included an eyelid laceration measuring about 2cm, a broken blood vessel in the eye, and a fracture of the eye, typically caused by blunt trauma.

As his condition was stable, the victim was discharged that same day at about 5:45pm.

The sentencing

Poh was charged with voluntarily causing grievous hurt to the victim, and Loh with using criminal force to cause injury to him.
The prosecutors sought tougher sentences for both: six to eight months' imprisonment against Poh, and the maximum fine of S$1,500 against Loh.

The prosecutors described Poh attack as "swift, vicious, and brutal". They highlighted that both offenders repeatedly struck the vulnerable parts of the victim's body even after he was lying unconscious and unable to defend himself.

On Sep. 19, the couple compensated the victim fully for his medical expenses, about S$835 in total, but the prosecutor argued that they did so belatedly, after the case had been fixed for a plead guilty mention.

Only compensated for medical expenses
Should sue them for general damages and pain and suffering
Should get at least $10000 & make them bankrupt if refuse to pay

So vicious. We should all take care of ourselves and don’t get into such circumstances if we can help it. You have a nice comfy healthy life ahead of you, don’t ruin it. These kind of bullies are old bengs and lians who don’t have much of a future ahead of them. Don’t let yourself be tainted.
