Recently came across these two models but seems like MSI GE60 (GTX850M) offer better price and performance as compared to G56JR (GTX760M).

What do you guys think?

I checked MSI GE60 at funan mall and felt inconsistent touchpad ..
here is the pros and cons from laptopmag.com

Pros: Great gaming and overall performance; Affordable price; Lightweight for its size; Backlit keyboard

Cons: Inconsistent touchpad; Subpar battery life; Runs hot while gaming; Somewhat bland case design

As a gamer, I don't use touch pad most of the time :s13: So i guess it doesn't really matter...

Anyway GE series now comes with full color backlit keyboard, the old GE only blue blacklit keyboard.

The review from laptopmag.com is new GE or old GE review?

Well the new design looks much better than old GE :D

The weight is not an issue.. For portability, might as well go for GS series.

New owner of MSI GE60 Apache!

Initially was extremely concerned about single fan on this heavy duty laptop.. but as a matter of fact, it is down running at a idle temperature of average 48 degrees on 4 cores.

Dota 2 for an hour with cooler boost.. abt 60-75 degrees. :)

Yours is GT 850M/GTX 860M? Anyway do you have the latest Thief game? If have please try to run the benchmark :)

Dota 2 was at 60-75 degrees, even after 3 hours~

I'm running on GTX 860M.

Can't run on benchmark on Thief as I don't have the game. :(

I need some inputs on both as well.

For GE60, I'm referring to the model with the following specs
i7-4800
GTX765m

For Asus G56,
i7-4700
GTX760m

Say if the price is about $150 more for MSI, worth it?

Why you still want to buy the older generation? Now GE60 using GTX 860M already which is way better in terms of performance and cooling compared to GTX 765M...

$1899 for GE60 2PC Apache with GTX 850M DDR5
or $2199 for GE60 2PE Apacher Pro with GTX 860M

The Asus G56JR is $1898 with GTX 760M only
If really want to buy Asus laptop better wait for Asus N550JK or Asus G550JK
Based on current N and G series model, most likely the price will be $1898 also
Both N550JK and G550JK will be using GTX 850M DDR3

If you don't mind waiting til end of the year
Probably the MSI GE60 models gonna have lower price
$1599 for 2PC and $1899 for 2PE model
These pricing pattern like have been practiced since 2012 for MSI GE series :D

tks tks, cannot wait till end year, my dell xps like dying soon
since got 2 shows coming soon, now do some homework and compare

how come n550jk n g550jk only using 850m ddr3 since these are new models??? msi one use ddr5? like this the graphics performance for msi should be already better right?

the keyboard lights for msi also nicer, from msi website this is steelseries keyboard? whats special for this?

then another difference i think is the killer lan, this helps better in gaming i think?

paiseh ah i so many questions =:p

Based on comparison since 650M DDR3 VS DDR5 and 750M DDR3 VS DDR5, the DDR5 always perform slightly better
Even the 4GB DDR3 found on all Asus laptop with GT X50M series can't perform better than GT X50M 2GB DDR5
So MSI one should be better

Steelseries keyboard is just a branding but personally I prefer the keyboard on MSI gaming series rather than any of the keyboard on latest Asus laptops
The tactile feedback on Steelseries keyboard feel much better
And MSI GE60 has adjustable multi-color backlit keyboard compared to single color on Asus N550JK/G550JK
I suggest you should hands on with keyboard first :)

The killer gaming LAN only helps when you playing game via LAN cable instead of wireless connection
If using wireless, need to check if the Asus Singapore model gonna use Intel 7260 AC at least
If never use, most likely the Intel 3160 AC on MSI GE60 series is better

I think Intel HM86 and HM87 main difference is the amount of mSATA slot
HM87 should support raid which means 2 mSATA
But I'm not sure if the GE60 Apacher series gonna use mSATA or M.2 (mSATA 2)

M.2_and_mSATA_SSDs_comparison.jpg

The pros of using raid with 2 identical storage is for faster speed
But for daily use most likely you won't notice the difference
So the HM87 is just a better choice for more storage slot

You better decide before buying whether you want to get SSD for the laptop
I would highly recommend to get a 120GB one at least for OS and common used programs such as browser, MS Office, etc
If you want to get the SSD, it's better to get it on the spot so the seller will be able to do the upgrade for you without voiding the warranty

wow! you really know a lot! tks tks!

hopefully can find a good deal for ge60 during show, the price below 2k also just nice for my budget! but then the higher specs model 2pe is only $2199 with better graphics, not sure if i would just go for it or not..

i think for me i won't be needing ssd but then again i don't see ssd option for either the msi or asus models? both of them also can add ssd?

may also want to go down challenger to hands on and hear the speakers, been checking around the internet and seems like the dynaudio is quite good.. heehee
