Send my 2 yrs + laptop for service at Laptop General hospital at Funan because always hang at startup. They called me 2 days later & suspect either software or hard disk problem. Few days later called to said it's motherboard problem & cost more than $200. I told them not to repair. When I collect back the laptop I bootup in safe mode & go to computer management to check the drive. Instead of the normal 3 partitions there were only 2 - the recovery partition gone. The tech said they format the whole drive & clear everything & reload the OS. After reaching home I removed the hard disk & found they replaced it with another drive. Is this normal or legal? Before I send it for repair I clone a copy of the hard disk with my desktop & now I am using that drive on the laptop.

Hi,

We did a check on the history. There is no component replacement.

What we did:

1) General diagnostic
Result: HDD issue or motherboard IC (harddisk controller) issue. We did a HDD scan and found that there a delay sectors. After the scan, the HDD is unable to boot up. Some software in the HDD is corrupted.
Usually in this kind of cases, HDD fault is more likely, thus we did a quick reformat first.

2) Reformating the HDD
Result: After reformatting, the problem still persist. Thus we did a in depth diagnostic on the motherboard and found out that it is the motherboard issue. We call you to quote for motherboard repair, you decided not to go ahead with the repair.

Thus we return you the unit with the formatted HDD. There is also no point to put back the recovery partition as the laptop is not functioning already.

Finally for the HDD change, may I know how you come to the conclusion that the HDD is change?

It is not quite possible for a few facts:

1) Your HDD have some delay sectors, though it is working, it is not a very good HDD. Thus it is pointless for us to swap it. A 2 years + old HDD has pretty high failure rates already.

2) If the HDD is indeed changed, it might be a mistake from our engineers who took our own testing HDD and left in inside. It is actually to your benefit. (That being said, we did not have any missing testing HDD for the last month).

If you really do need the recovery partition back, you can always come back and we put it back for you.

But do note that since your original HDD is not working too well already, there is always a possibility of it breaking down.

I know it's a different hdd because I took it out & make a clone copy before sending in for service. The original hdd is WD 320gb without any names like Blue Caviar on it but the latter hdd is a Blue Caviar 320gb hdd. I serviced & repair desktop PCs' but I don't repair laptops. Now the laptop is fitted with the cloned hdd & running quite ok but only on battery power. The moment I plugged into the mains it will hanged after 5 mins. I am very sure it's not the hdd problem.
