You can go on your own. My advise is get the 2day free pass to hakone. Don't have one day by the way. Depending on your choice, you cam get the local pass or the comprehensive one between 4000yen or 5000plus yen. I got the 4000yen which will take me from odawara to togendai where I be staying for a night before heading to osaka. If you have the JR Pass then get the local pass as you can take the train to odawara.
Weather is generally good these past 2days here. Temp around 6 to 9 degree. Hopefully can get a clear weather tomorrow as well when I go hakone.

Thank you for your reply, I have planned my itinerary for the Hakone trip as after much consideration, i wouldn't want to pay $150 to sit on the bus, and feel rushed during the trip.

My plan is to take JR to Odawara, then Hakone Tozan Bus to Hakone Shrine, take the Bus back to hakone yumoto, take the tozan railway to Gora, then cable car and rope way to Owakudani to eat the black egg. After that, take the ropeway and cable car back to Gora and take Tozan bus to the Gotemba Premium Outlet. The day trip will end with me taking the shuttle bus back to Gotemba and JR to Tokyo..

I don't think I need the hakone free pass do I? That's for people who want to tour the whole of hakone?

I took the premium tour with Shinkansen return. Was travelling with kids so does't want any cockup happening. The trip was supposingly going by premium coach but coz there isn't any other group so the guide got us a private car instead. So throughout the trip was quite relaxing and the guide was very informative. The only timing to watch is for the boat tour in one of the lakes coz any delay in that will affect our Shinkansen return trip...

I suppose it will be a lot cheaper if i can plan myself... but with kids i prefer hassle free trip...

I remember that if you want to take the ropeway, lake cruise and rail or bus around Hakone, it's cheaper to just buy the free pass. Individually, they will cost more.

Thanks! I think I will just buy the 4000 yen free pass. Where to take the lake cruise? Don't know whether I have enough time for it though.

If i recall correctly, there's a small row of bus stops just outside the train station. One of the buses will take you to the edge of the lake where you can board the cruise. After the cruise take the rope way to the mountain top, then take train back to the train station. You can do it in reverse also. All included in the free pass.

Found the route! Seems like I can visit Hakone shrine, then take the boat, then the rope way to the sulfur mountain to eat the black egg!
