hi, would like to check with the experts if there is any storage product that can:

1) connect to a PC via USB and acts like a DAS i.e. just an external USB drive
2) also functions as a NAS concurrently
3) has raid capabilities

Have tried searching online but not been able to find an answer.

thanks in advance for your help.

None that I know of...

If you want an NAS to act like a DAS, connect the NAS to your PC directly via ethernet port.
If you want a DAS to act like an NAS, just share out the drive through your OS.

If you are going to constantly connect the NAS directly to a PC, it kinds of defeats the purpose. If that is the way it is gonna be, just use a DAS with RAID function; a lot cheaper and faster transfer too.

NAS or DAS, you should be looking at both access and hardware required.

NAS: usually connect to a router/switch, accessible to all within the same network.
DAS: usually connect via USB/eSATA port, need a host computer and power on too.

thanks. i need DAS and NAS at the same time. one PC which cannot be connected to the network will be connected to the DAS via USB to write data. A few other PCs connected via a network will need to read the data via NAS.

right now, i need to download data from the non-network PC onto an external hard drive and then copy it to over to the NAS for the other PCs to access it.

As an alternative, is there a DAS where multiple PCs can access at the same time with the DAS connected to the PC writing data via USB and the rest accessing the data can be connected via other interfaces like thunderbolt, firewire etc?

Better to use an USB3.0 thumb drive to copy data from non-networked PC than using external hard drive.

Since the non-networked PC has USB, why don't you consider buying a USB Wifi/ethernet adapter and connect to the network ? This way, all your PCs just need to access a NAS.

DAS acts like a usb or harddisk on a system, so u can't share with multiple users. DAS is usually formatted in the client native format, eg. FAT32 or NTFS, etc, whereas in NAS, it is usually formatted using the NAS OS native format, usually ext3, ext4, xfs, etc.

Ya best option is get the non networked PC to be networked, through usb lan or wifi as already mentioned.
