NAS Question and Recommendation

As per the title, I am looking for 2-bays NAS.

Use cases
- File and photos
- Setup Time machines (this is more of Synology Feature)
- Multimedia ( Plex)

I do have some models in mind DS218 or DS218play. what is the benefit of Btrfs?

I am open for recommendation for my use cases. and where is the best place to shop/research for NAS? Which shop in Sim Lim?

I recommend reading up on the different storage file systems (Eg. ZFS) before making informed decision. Then you will likely shortlist your NAS choices, whether to get an OTS (off-the-shelf) NAS which will probably be a Synology NAS or a DIY NAS. An OTS NAS is recommended for beginners and users who are looking for those work right out-of-the-box (app) NAS solutions. For advanced (can tinker) and enterprise users who want resiliency, DIY NAS is the way to go, but definitely not for the faint of heart.​

I being thought the DIY NAS before.... not going there, I just want thing just work out of the box. 2-bays also have x86-64 CPU… any other particular reason to use 4-bay?

I bought a Asustor 2bay recently. Looking for a drive. Home use, for backup, file transfer, storage... all the home stuff.

I have mostly been using WD, whether portable or previously for Desktop. But I'm very much out of touch. So seeking quick advice, which to order. Reliability and not too loud. 4-6TB. One drive for the time being.

THanks for any replies, I know it take time to respond to me... so thanks for your help.

Hi all,

Looking to do a side project, DIY NAS.

These are the parts that i have currently laying around at home.

CPU: i9-9900k
Memory: VENGEANCE® RGB PRO 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4 DRAM 3600MHz C18
Motherboard: ROG Maximus XI Gene / MSI MPG Z390I GAMING EDGE AC
GPU: MSI GeForce RTX 2080 Gaming X Trio 8GB
PSU: Corsair SF600 Platinum / Corsair AX760

Currently using a Synology DS1621+ with 6x10TB. It is mainly used to backup photos/videos and for Plex-ing.
These are the apps that i am currently use since the first time i started NAS-ing with my first Synology DS916+ in 2017.


With the DIY NAS, i am hoping to move away from Synology totally or at least have Synology to be for backups only and move the Plex to the DIY NAS and maybe have some VMs for lab.

Are the items i have laying around sufficient for me to move to DIY NAS and eventually host all my apps there permanently? Future proof? My current plex is serving 5 family members, all not in the same house and so far no issue as i only have files at 720p and 1080p. However i have tried 4k and so far so good at streaming simultaneously.

Just look for 5400rpm drives.

If I remember correctly only WD Red and Blue are still 5400rpm.

9900K with 2080 is overkill for your tasks. Just go for it.
