NAS System with good access over internet

Hi, Just want to check if there is any good NAS system that has a good "cloud" system. Currently using Buffalo NAS Navigator 2.0. Model: LS421DE

Main issue is i need to access outside always when I'm overseas. But Buffalo the "cloud" system is doggy at best and half the time unable to access

or is it due to my network setting issue?

Any advice appreciated.

Btw, Google cloud storage is too little and other online cloud storage are either need pay monthly / storage is not enough. So that option is out.

Direct access to NAS. instead of relying on cloud.

Cloud is convenient but dependable on the bandwidth available by the cloud provider. Usually it is congested

I'm a noob on networking and looking to get another NAS instead of using buffalo. Off the shelf type. budget under SGD 500.

Actually main issue here is I have problem accessing through the buffalo website (buffalonas.com) and searching for another NAS brand (off the shelf) that has good reliability on the access from internet.

Pardon the unclear question.

It looks like quite a few ppl recommend using Synology, but i search through the forum and internet and did not notice anyone mentioned about if it's good with accessing from the web. Any advice on this?

Or is there any other brands that is good with web access?

I have used numerous nas including your buffalo nas.

Currently on Synology.

None has an issue if you perform port forwarding on your router and access it from outside.

Synology cloud storage is decent but i would still prefer directly connecting to my NAS than adopting the use of cloud.

Then again, if you want a no brainer approach, Synology cloud is extremely easy to set up

I have a DS213. As long you port forward the necessary port on your router, accessing your file from remotely won't be much of an issue.

Of course, the speed of downloading the file remotely would depends on the network upload speed of your NAS location (preferably fiber connection).

Before you jump ship into another NAS, you need to be more certain with accessing the Buffalo NAS issues. Can you ascertain if the issue is with the network, or with the cloud services offered by Buffalo to allow you remotely connect to your NAS ?

Your problem seems to be using the Buffalo cloud service which is actually what we call a reverse tunnel for dynamic ip or firewall restriction, because your remote traffic to access your NAS is actually from your laptop/desktop outside of your home routed to buffalo cloud service jump host (possibly outside of singapore) then back to singapore via the reverse tunnel that your NAS connected with Buffalo cloud service.

I will recommend the following instead. Run a VPN server using your router(if supported), or perform a NAT from your router to your NAS exposing CIFS/SMB publicly with authentication (lower security), access directly from your remote system to your NAS at home.

I suggest using a cloud router instead.

one example is dlink 868L. There are other models available.

what you need to do is to plug in an USB HDD to the router, and you will be able to access it anywhere in the world.

Went to the router. the Webaccess IP and the NAS IP is different. So i need to change the IP in the router? Seems like I can access the web access using home network just fine. once go to external network then cannot access.

Issue is there is 250 entries in the port forwarding and I cannot create anymore entries. Seems to be alot of repeated entries like PPStream (actually almost 200 entries) Can these be removed? Cuz 1st time trying this so I worry if i randomly remove something the router will go kaput.

If possible I want to create a working one before 1 delete the default entry.

Why are you having 200+ port forwarding rules? Do you even have that much of services running as a consumer?

The IP address to your consumer broadband is mostly only ONE. Google for "what is my ip address" and you will see that is your public IP address if you want to access any service that may be running at home. The idea of port forwarding is because there are could be numerous services running on different physical hosts within your network and they are normally on different ports. So suppose u port forward port 8888 to port 12345@192.168.23.1 then when something access port 8888 @ your public IP address, the packet will be routed to port 12345 internally @ 192.168.23.1

That is how port forwarding works. Some routers do not allow port forwarding from a different port to another, just translating the IP address, some do.

I am not sure of what ports you have configured for PPstream or does it even need one at all. Perhaps you want to post how you port forward. A screenshot of your router configuration. hide your public IP address if it is shown.

The only consumer router i've used till date automatic configure rules on the pretext for upnp.

remove it then. Remember, is at your own risk. Since nobody could tell you exactly what those rules are.
