Hi I just got into a course for digital visual effects.

So I'm planning to get a new laptop for it.

Budget about $2.5k or less

Need to have slim design, no need to be totally very slim

Is getting a gaming laptop the same for this case?

Thinking of getting the MSI one but they don't have the left windows button :(

Where should I survey the prices from? Like online which websites? Courts/best denki etc? Or wait for poly when they sell laptops?

Sent from my Galaxy S5 using GAGT

Since you are doing a course on digital visual effects, you can consider the Apple Macbooks because they are good. You can also check the poly's website where they will tell you about what kind of laptop you should get like a windows laptop or Macbook.

As for for the prices, you can check with major stores like Courts, Harvey Norman etc , and also Funan is a great place. Also try to wait for IT Shows and try to compare the prices here and there. For poly IT shows, they only sell selected models and i'm not sure if it is true but i read before somewhere that they have restrictions on the laptops sold at the poly IT shows.

Get workstation graphics if possible like the WS60, don't expect to play games though, since you don't even mention the need to play games i assume that it is not a priority.

Got my preferred preference:

Budget: <$2000 preferred
Preferred Screen:
- 13 to 15 inch. 17 inch would be too large for me.
- At least Full HD
- Glossy screen, if possible
Preferred brand: HP, MSI, Asus, Razer (Acer would be out unless really no choice)
Primary Tasks to do on this laptop:
- rendering (After Effects)
- graphics design (Photoshop)
- animation, programming and web design
Would be taking the laptop out for school.
Battery life: as long as possible, preferably > 4 hours
Preferred Design:
- Slim and Light as possible, with simple look
- Island style keyboard
- Upgradable hardware such as RAM/HDD/SSD
- At least 3 USB ports, 1 ethernet port (unless comes with adapter), 1 HDMI port, audio jacks, SD card optional but good to have it.
Preferred hardware:
- At least 4GB RAM
- >2.3Ghz (base) Quad-core i7 (or dual-core i7)
- Dedicated graphics card with at least 2GB VRAM, Nvidia preferred
- 2.5 inch HDD space for me to migrate my current SSD over or > 256GB for mSATA
- Optical Drive not necessary, even if it does have, the slim design would be out, unless it’s like 2012 Macbook

Do I really need i7 processor if I'm going to render alot?
