Need a new PC for video editing

Hi all, my current PC can't edit on video timelines larger than 1080p and I want to get a pc that can handle 4k60fps at least, so I can set the gopro or next cameras I buy to that resolution. I use DaVinci Resolve (which seems to need a decent GFX) and Adobe Premiere Elements (not the pro version).

Current PC Assembled by someone else in May 2013
Processor: i5 3570
MB: asrock b75 pro3m
Ram: kingston 8gb ddr3
GFX Card: powercolor 7950 3gb pcs plus
SSD: plextor m5 pro 128 gb ssd
HDD: TOSHIBA DT01ACA200 2TB 7200 RPM (bought in 2017 to replace old hdd)
DVD: asus 24x dvdrw
PSU: fsp platinum 550 w
Case: sharkoon t28 case
OS: Windows 10 Home (should be tied to MB, I lost the cd key)
Wifi Receiver: linksys ae 3000 dual band n receiver (I use wifi, not negotiable... would be nice to get an internal wifi card so it doesn't stick out of my com)

I think the parts are a little old, so maybe it's just better to get a new PC than try to upgrade, and pass this PC to another family member.
I've a budget of $1,400-$1,800 (hoping to purchase at least a Ryzen 7 1700). I'll be doing video editing and light gaming (used to be a bigger gamer, but even then I don't use max settings).

I was thinking of getting all my parts from PC Themes so they can help me assemble for free and maybe get the OS from Carousell.

I can't recommend you R7-1700 if your are getting from PCThemes. Ryzen prices has great discounts in US, sometimes as low as $199 usd aka $270 sgd. On our shore, it's still S$500+

I suggest looking into Intel i7-8700k. For a little more, you will get 6 cores 12 threads with higher clock speeds which will negate the lesser 2 cores compared to Ryzen...

I just built a Ryzen 1600x recently. Here's my built

Ryzen 5 1600x
ASRock ab350m pro4
Cm hyper 212 LED turbo
Evga G3 650w
Evga 1070 ftw gfx
2x8gb crucial ram 3000mhz
Silverstone fortress ft02 casing

I sourced out all my parts from carousell except gfx and ram which was purchased via prime now.

Quite a number of good deals and overall is cheaper than if I were to get from sls.

Maybe you can tweak my build to suit your preference and requirements

Prices are quoted from Dynacore due to PCThemes not having ASRock Z370 Killer SLI/AC motherboard. That motherboard has good wifi built-in, so you'll save on getting an extra wifi card/adapter.

Get the i7-8700K for Overclocking to 4.8Ghz+ with the Noctua NH-U12s. The beefy cooler will keep the CPU well within acceptable temperature when you're running video rendering for a long time.

RAM needs at least 16GB for 4K files, with the option to add in another 16GB for a future upgrade as necessary.

I wish you would have a bigger budget for at least 1TB SSD. SSDs will help with steaming and seeking 4K videos on your editing software. 500GB might just be enough when putting raw files for processing. Make sure you have a backup and archiving solution.

For GPU, GTX 1060 6GB should be enough for casual gaming. GPU is still important in video editing for GPU accelerated effects, the bigger the better. Since CPU is more important for now, 1060 should be enough.

For casing, Silverstone RL06 due to its meshed front. Better for cooling the system with great air-flow. You'll want a cool system for rendering and editing. You do not wish to have overheating issues. It also has 3x HDD bays for the future add-on of hard drives. You can still use your current 2TB first.

Thanks for the part list and the explanation! Hmm I suppose I can adjust my budget upwards, it was kinda arbitrary. But the 8700k doesn't seem just a bit more expensive than the ryzen 1700 once you add in the expensive cooler; it's about $300 more. I don't do that much heavy video editing so i think a 500gb ssd would be fine. I try not to record too much footage so that I don't have too much footage to go through.

I suppose the price can be justified if TS does editing full-time. Y'know, sometimes the important things (such as SW battlefront II lootboxes) are expensive but requires the splurge....

Ok, then it seems like Intel is the way to go. What about the Intel 8700 version instead of 8700k? CPU + Mobo = $676 compared to $755 and I don't need to buy an additional cooler for $103. Can probably also drop the PSU to 550W also ($105). Less heat sounds good during the hotter months of the year haha.

Hmm, locked Intel 8700 is ok if you do not wish to overclock. But the included intel stock cooler isn't the best way to keep CPU cool especially when you're doing video editing. I am sure there will be thermal throttling.

Please at least include a cooler like Cryorig H7 or Cooler Master Hyper 212X...

Can I suggest you to wait a few more months? Maybe February or March when the H370 or B360 boards for Intel will be out. Hopefully DDR4 prices will drop by then. There is also Ryzen Refresh coming soon.

Thanks for all your help! I will get the first build you recommended then (8700k). If not I may look at something cheaper like the ryzen 1600 like in this thread http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/hardware-clinic-2/pc-below-%241500-budget-5751585.html#post112101167 , but I think I will just fork out more money for 8700k so that it's a more substantial upgrade over my 4.5yr old pc.
