Hi guys,

Just signed up with MR but thought I'll seek some expert advice on whether I should buy the Asus RT-N56U or the RT-N66U?

One is max 300Mbps and the other is 450Mbps but correct me if I'm wrong the Pure plan is only 100Mbps so this isn't even a factor.

The N66U support the DD-WRT though I've no idea what it is or will I be using it.

Overall for a single storey HDB flat will the RT-N56U be solid enough or is it worth to spend the extra $70 for the RT-N66U?

Performance wise or range are there any big difference between the 2? Location of router will be in a central part of one side of the flat. Like the inner middle part of one side of a square.

Mainly used to feed 2 PC and one laptop each about 8-10 feet away unblocked though will be nice too if the rooms and bathrooms can also enjoy uninterrupted connectivity for the laptops and phones.

Please advise. Many thanks.

Edit to add: Went for the N56U. It's great. 5 bar even at my neighbour's house 2 units away.

Router is one thing, but your hardware must also support 450mbps. If you got the $$ and your hardware supports 450mbps, I say go for it.

Get the RT-N56U.

Cheaper. Value for money.
Good Performance.
Looks Good.
Easy Setup.

Typical user on 100Mbps - 150Mbps fibre plan won't regret using this.

Frankly I have no idea whether my hardware support 450mbps. Now that you mentioned it I guess not lol. But the MyRepublic Pure is "only" at 100mbps am I right?

$$ no enough so I ask... :(

people buy extreme router (eg the 450Mbps) is not due to just internet alone.

if your router is all you need to spread the wireless spectrum and distribute network to individual devices for pure INTERNET surfing

then yes, the RT56U should suffice.

if you owns a NAS, and/or do multiple heavy internal (PC to PC in your own network) bandwidth related stuffs - yet want to only hop it via the wireless route, the 450Mbps router will be a much better choice for wireless.

for range wise, alot of HWZer hv mentioned that the RT66U is alot better.

Nobody can guarantee whether your only "1 floor HDB" could get full signal everywhere hence if budget permits, i will cast my vote on the RT66U.

reason: at least if it doesn't work the way you "hope" it will, you will know that the RT56U is not going to help either.

But the range for 66 even if he's not utilising 450mbps would be better than 56 because of the external antennas right?

Also have the same question and waiting for Sitex this week to get either.

I think the 66 has VPN capability but 56 don't have so that is one consideration I taking.

I guess speed wise difference is not much becos dependent on ISP also. So I guess range is another important consideration.

Is 66 range further? Or can go through walls better?

If I buy the 66 which has VPN capability, do i still need to pay for those vpn providers? Would like to access hulu, netflix.

What other capabilities does 66 have compared with 56?

Yeah, you still have to. VPN Server is just for you to VPN home. N66U is N900 (450Mbps + 450Mbps) whereas N56U is N750 (300 + 450).

can tell me in what scenario we need a vpn at home?

When you're out on an unencrypted wifi access point and have sensitive data to transfer, VPN home to use home connection so that the line is secure. As well as alot of other uses..

Most users will never need it la honestly.

Sorry to hijack... Those newly build L shape HDB 3 room flat is N56U enough? Will be signing 150mbps fibre this week. How is the speed? Can the range be perfect after going through 1 thick wall? My PC is just opposite the living room.

Living Room
TV. Router. (Thick wall about 30cm) PC
