Hi,

I'm not a fps gamer, play more rpgs like Fallout and Mass Effect. My PSU just died and I want to take the opportunity to upgrade my 4-yr old cpu/mobo (Asus P8-H67 + i5-2300)

I will keep my current R7 260x card and 1680x1050 monitor as I'm currently playing low graphic intensive games.

Is this overkill?

Asus Z170-P D3 + 6600 3.3 i5,
8gb DDR3 RAM
750W power supply

When I do change to a 1080p monitor I will probably upgrade the graphics card. Maybe in 1 yrs time.

if u not going to get 6600k it is advisable to get h170 or b170 board....and ddr3L or ddr4 is recommended for skylake so get DDR4 8gb ram and psu 600w shld be enough

overkill for PSU and board
if getting non K series chip, no point getting Z series board unless you like the looks and your casing has windows to display it. Maybe you can upgrade the chip to i5 6600K and play with OC !!
Most 100 Series board are already using DDR4 but the board you choose is still using DDR3/DDR3L, so 8GB of DDR3 is enough unless you are going to use it for video rendering stuff, than maybe can get a 16GB instead

Your i5 2300 is still a decent cpu, it wont bottleneck your system. Just get a new 500w psu and maybe a better graphics card/monitor, dont need to spend so much on cpu and mobo.

Thanks. The thing is my PC has been behaving a bit strangely in the last year. It will sometimes refuse to start up - as in keyboard got light but monitor no picture and no POST beep. I don't know if there is a mobo or RAM issue. Then starting yesterday, it is completely dead. When I press the power button the cpu fan spins up for a few seconds then stops.

Do you think it is purely a PSU issue?

You should change PSU and get a better GPU.
