Need advice for DIY rig

Hi, i’m building a rig mainly to watch shows, and probably for steam games in future although i have stopped for a long time.

Looking for mid-range and that can last.

Budget: $1500-$1700

Can anyone advise what best to get for the following?

1) Processor
2) gpu (or integrated?)
3) Ram (8gb or 16gb)
4) Power supply

"steam games" is very vague - some Steam games are high end AAA titles.

For now I'd say get a Ryzen 2400G with 16GB of RAM, and nvme M.2 and just buy a GPU if, and only if, you decide to game again and it's a high end title.

Like dota 2 and left4dead? Forgot I need a motherboard haha.

My friend is suggesting I get a asus b350-plus for mobo and either a Ryzen 2600g or 2400g. Not sure if I will need a 2600g since I don’t game now.

Well, there isn't a ryzen 2600g(G series is max at 2400g) series but there's 2600 or the older 1400/1600. The main different between 2400g and 2600 is the 2400g is 4c8t while 2600 is 6c12t and 2400g have integrated Vega graphics which is around gt1030 graphic level.

Since u dont game now, and 2600 can't work without a graphic card. I would suggest u getting the 2400g and when u wishes to game, u can easily add a graphic card. 2400g can handle up to gtx1070 with a slightly bottleneck on gtx1080

Edit: saw that u planning to play l4d and the likes, I would suggest 2400g for your needs


In short: ryzen 2400g if dont plan to game now or ryzen 2600 + RX/GTX series GPU if u plan to game now

Intel processor integrated graphics cannot really play game unless you OK with 640 x 480 resolution at low settings. Dont want buy GPU get 2200g. If want go Intel buy at least GT 1030 to go with it RAM speed does not matter for Intel platform.

Posted this before,
but if you're just going for games like L4D2, Ryzen 2400G is enough to obtain 60+FPS at 1080p.

Don't need to buy GPU.
But Dota2 might need to drop to Mid-High settings for Consistent 60+FPS @ 1080p.

Or you can drop to 720p for 60+ FPS at Best Looking settings

750W is overkill. Go for 550W version

I suggest you go for a budget MSI X470 Gaming board for extra $50~

You can redeem $20 NTUC vouchers + $20 USD Steam Code from MSI website to sort of cover the extra $50.

X470 chipset will provide more functions to the new Ryzen 2600X processor such as Precision Boost 2...

Incorrect, PB2 is part of Ryzen 2, not the chipset.

I am sorry, I meant to say Precision Boost Overdrive on X470.

X470, PB Overdrive will work out of the box. Certain X370 boards will work with BIOS Update. Don't see any B350 that will work with it.

Precision Boost Overdrive will push the Ryzen CPU automatically to its thermal or power limits.

PB2 and XFR2 might work on B350 board but it might not boost as well as X470 Motherboard due to the VRM limitation.

Also, X470 has StoreMI which is a great add-on technology too.

Now, it's $50 extra for X470 but will get back in voucher and steam credits so I am just pointing out it is a reasonable upgrade.
