Hi all,

I'm building a new rig and have done some research. I've narrowed my choices to the following and would like to seek some advice from you guys.

i5-4570 + MSI B85 G43 Gaming ~ $384
G.Skill Ripjaws 1600mhz 2x4gb kit red ~ $113
MSI R9 280X 3GB Twin Frozr (w BF4) ~ $469
Crucial m500 240GB ~ $155 (ordered from amazon, otw)
WD Blue 1TB ~ $75
Samsung SATA 24X DVD Writer ~$24
Seasonic G650 280+ Gold Modular PSU ~$135/Superflower HX 500 500W ~$90
Corsair Carbide t230 red ~$105/Fractal Desgin Arc Midi ~$129
Dell S2340L 23" eIPS Panel ~ $219

Total should come up to around $1679. Purpose is for gaming, such as bf4, titanfall, dota2 at 1080p max settings. I'm also going to start year 2 in SMU IS and i heard that i might have to run servers and stuff, so not very sure if i should get more ram.

Also, would like to know if it's worth it to get the fractal desgin arc midi, as my budget can stretch all the way up to $2k or more. Do let me know if there are any upgrades that are "worth-it".

Thanks!

If you can go up to 2k then can get r9 290.

The rest is fine. Well balance rig and would suffice.

Is the r9 290 worth the extra cash? from some benchmarking reports i've seen that the 280x is enough to run all games at max settings right now. so what my "strategy" right now is to wait for the current top tier card to drop in price in say, 2 years' time, sell my 280x, and top up a few hundred to get a better card.

also, the 2 chassis that i picked, is it worth it to get the more expensive one?

thanks!

hmmm for the card just get the better one if you can afford. nobody knows how much the price will drop by 2 years. lets say what if either amd or nvidia introduce a new budget card that can perform similarly but at a cheaper price in 2 years, making 280x price drop by alot. But that is just my opinion though. If i were you i would get 290 cause will be able to last slightly longer than 280x and i believe by then time i choose to upgrade my system 290 will not be worth alot and i will happily sell it away at cheap price cause i fully utilized it le.

hmm cause i've read a couple of posts where the OP wanted to get 290 and was told that it was overkill if he is intending to play on 1080p, hence my decision to get a 280x. but definitely will consider your opinions on 290. thanks!

anyone else got comments on the chassis and also, side track a bit, the hdmi cable that comes with the gpu, can i connect it from my rig to my tv screen? thanks.

As said by many bros there isnt such a thing like "futureproofing" no matter how much u spend. Best is upgrade yearly

hmmm up to you ba best is to spend what you can and willing to afford at a comfortable pricing. For the HDMI can connect to TV as long as your TV have the port and the tv will only be running at 1080p, so is not a problem for 280x.
Btw i don't remember GPU comes with HDMI cable lol

Yepp agreed but still a good GPU should be can last Max settings for 2 years ba, beyond that will start to see dipping to mid le

Hmm, that's why dont wanna get such a good one now. just wanna get one that's "good enough" for max settings, wait for new one/price drop then buy that and sell off the old one! not sure how this method will work out though, not enough experience to tell if that's really the case. anyway yeah, gonna try upgrading part by part on a yearly basis liao, my old rig is 6 years old, still can play dota 2 etc, but it's really slow and basically cant reuse any parts from there . (maybe the 500gb hdd bah hahaha)

hmm oh it doesn't ah? okay i think still alright cause i have the hdmi cable from my xbox360 that just died a few days ago. so now my pc's gonna become my new console/dvd player. plus i just found this wireless receiver that can allow my xbox360 controllers to be used on my pc, damn good. hahaha. search damn long liao, go challenger, comics connection all those also cannot find.

anyone got any opinions on the chassis not! i used to think to just get the cheapest chassis, and not very sure if the upgrade is "worth it" in a sense! so any opinions on that 2 specific chassis would be greatly appreciated!

hahahaha im just using some $5 china brand ps3 controller, feels like the real thing just that you have to bear with the stupid chinese name on the controller hahaha.

Cases ah... both are good cases but i would take the arc midi ONLY IF i got spare cash, cause can put in more 140mm fans, meaning more airflow (if you are interested can go research CFM and RPM, doesnt mean that more RPM more airflow). But remember even if you got the cash to throw into a case that have more features and functions, will you utilize it? If its me i wont, cause i feel that running on a single GPU even a cheap case like T28 which only have 3 cheap 120mm fans can have enough airflow to keep it running cool. Unless you are going for X-fire or SLI, or even watercooling, you are going to need more fans to keep it cool.

Ofc the other reason to choose between one case from another is its aesthetic design.

<slight OT>

I graduated from SMU IS.

I don't think you have time to do projects on your PC. Upgrade your laptop RAM to 8GB will help a lot.

those bros are right get one good enough for your use and sell away. upgrade as often but be prepared to lose up to 80%
