Need advice, local degree vs private.

Not always true. From my observation, European MNCs (excluding those in finance industry) wouldn't cross you out immediately if you have good internships/part-time work.

Not sure if they treat applicants the same or not, but often, their application form will ask u to state if any part of your degree is DL?

That piece of paper is like a ticket. Some tickets are more branded and recognised. That's a true fact.

Why not? If you study part-time, you can get a full-time job at the side for 1 or 2 years and some employers do value such experience.

That's why I always encourage people who want to do DL to do part-time and work part-time instead of studying full-time.

Study DL work and study part time is good. But TS is deciding between local and DL lei... working FT exp is not equal to internship placement...

My opinion differs from majority of the people in this thread. I think private degree is worth considering given the shorter time frame. A good local degree has a higher chance of securing your first job but thats usually where the main advantages stop (in the private sector). Your success after your first job pretty much depends on your capability and work experience there after.

Local degree helps get your foot in the door. Fresh grads don't have experience to compare with each other. Hence, the only thing the company can compare is your degree, and since local degree is better, they will choose a local grad. However, after a few years, they won't look much to your degree anymore. They will look at your work experiences, KPI, or any post-grad qualifications/certs to compare since your degree being 7-10 years ago is basically redundant.

I am currently 24 years old Poly grad, I went NS and ITE

I wanted to study SIM, my GPA is 3.61

my mentor is advising me to go NTU or NUS, which is 4 years

Is it worth to invest in local uni? because by the time I grad I am alrdy 29

Is 29 years old okay to find a job?

Any internship sure, good ones based on what one is going to uni for may not be that easy. Say many ppl here drean of going IB, can they secure internship with banks to make their way into IB making big $$? Or engineering in aerospace.
Work based in poly dip sure, if A levels how? They are not train for anything getting into a dream good internship is harder.

either they are really clueless, believing that DL is the same as local or are just sore that they are in private unis...

Local unis are more comprehensive and well-rounded, especially for SMU. SMU focuses on helping students get used to the work-force through presentations, etc.

A private uni tend to offer less modules, which is why you graduate faster. If you simply want some knowledge in the field and go to work asap, go for private. But if you want a more comprehensive knowledge about your field, as well as better career prospects in future, go for local. Another reason for choosing private instead of local is if you need definitely need income within two years' time, for family purposes.

NUS/NTU Degree is from Singapore.

SIT Degree is a distance learning degree & the different between SIT & private school is SIT have government subsidies for their distance learning degree.

It stated in their brochure to ask their graduates to study Master Degree to be consider by PEB Sg to become PE because their Bachelor/Honours Degree in Engineering is not recognize by PEB Sg.

So you can judge the different if you want to work in government related jobs.

A lot of people has failed to realise the importance of university. Many think that private and local is no diff in private sector. yes maybe in terms of salary. but there is one thing that will make a diff in ur life and thats ur social network.

Why do u think ppl want to go to top uni in the world ? becuz they can teach 1+1= 2 better than local uni? its the networking opportunities there.

I agree. Don't choose SIT engineering if want to be PE. THose peeps who went SIT are mostly peeps who wants to work overseas or just want to get a cert. and work in other sectors.

Almost half of the cohort graduated were offered jobs in their university's home country and some didn't came back to contribute to sg's economy. lolol
