Need advice on getting into SIT OT

Hello. I have just graduated from poly this year with a GPA of 3.09 in Diploma of Medicinal Chemistry in NYP and i was rejected for this year's intake. Hence i decided to take a gap year. Now, i am studying in HMI Institute of Health Sciences (Therapy) to be a certified therapy assistant. From there onward, i would be working in a hospital under therapists and plan to apply again next year. However, the lecturers here have been very dis-encouraging, because only few managed to get in. Based on statistics, only 2 students with GPA 3.5 and above with Diploma in Sport Sciences managed to get in after 2 tries. (Worked for 2 years)

In addition to this, I plan to go volunteering as often as I can. So far I am starting out with Helping Joy. Does anybody have recommendations of where to volunteer on weekends? My course is Monday- Friday (845-545) so I am unable to volunteer on weekdays

Is there anyone out there that can give me some advice on how to increase my chances to get an interview to get into SIT? I am really keen to be an Occupational Therapist, as it would enable my dreams and passion to help people medically since young.

Hi, I have graduated from NYP this year too with a relevant diploma. Yes, from what I have gathered from my lecturers, only a few of my course mates managed to enter Allied Health programmes at SIT, where all of them obtained a Diploma with Merit.

Nevertheless, I applied and got into Occupational Therapy with a GPA of 3.35 after appealing. I feel that your personal statement plays a great role. (You could explain how did your interest in OT came about, any personal experiences, etc.) I started volunteering during the second year of poly at an external organisation on weekends to teach underprivileged children, so it is not exactly relevant to OT. Hence, any volunteering role would definitely help you, be it relevant or not. As to where to volunteer on weekends, you can try signing up for programmes under the Youth Corps.

You do not needs to be certified therapy assistant from HMI or other Institutes to work as a therapy assistant. It does not help you to get into SIT cause end day, they still see your Polytechnic Diploma result.

You may want to consider getting another full time Polytechnic Diploma course or private GCE A to enter SIT OT? Or you study approved Degree from overseas in order to work as OT in Singapore? Sorry but you do not have other ways cause Singapore always like to limit Singaporeans when it come to better jobs like professional.

Mmmm the course was a very basic 3 months introduction towards therapy support, it would be a plus if you could go for it because there's an 5 weeks attachment where you can really see what and OT and PT is really about. But if you don't want to waste your time and money, you can start applying for jobs in community hospitals (Sengkang/Outram is hiring),cause this is where you can really get hands on experience. It might be hard to get the job if you're not from HMI, but as long as you prove you got your stuff, and willingness to learn, you can come onboard as there is OTJ training (even for HMI graduates). But otherwise, you should go for the course as most of the TAs i know came from there, and I have a friend that waited for about 2 months for a TA job without HMI background but to no avail, thus signed up for HMI. And anyways, you might get to make friends in HMI that might in the same situation as you, so that's one plus thing you can consider!

Honestly, as long as you really show that you got the heart and passion to serve and state clearly why you want to be an OT/PT in your personal statement, you can get the interview, and in the interview, you really got to show how much it means to you and you wouldn't drop out halfway (considering how tough it is). Cause I am afraid I would have to break the contract in order to make it for SIT admission next year if, for example, I am accepted into SIT next year. In addition, HMI's course takes about 3 months to complete, so it would result in starting work later and lesser time to work. (correct me if I am wrong hahaha)

Hello! Sorry for the late reply! I was afraid about the contract thingy too, but i found out that it is fine to leave, if the hospital didn't specify how long you have to stay. Normally if you have to leave, then just inform 1 month in advance then it will be good enough already! It would be good to inform your employer that you might be leaving for your studies during the job interview though, so that they would know you might leave. Anyways SIT intake always start in Sep, so lets say if u get into the course now, you would finish in Sept? Then you would already work for about 1 year ah! So no worries!

In the case that I'm rejected, if you don't mind, could you give me some advice of how to further increase my chance to get into SIT OT next year. I graduated from NYP with a Nursing Diploma, with a GPA of 3.14. Is working in as a TA in Community Hospital the best i can do to increase my chance for next year intake? And if you don't mind can you tell me how was your application outcome the 1st time u applied for the course, did u graduate with a Poly diploma(before working as a TA)?
